The collection started in 2011 with a project conducted by the Innsbruck Newspaper Archive (IZA) and funded by the Austrian Science Fund. We crawl, manage and store the collection in cooperation with the „Archive-it“-service of the Internet Archive in San Francisco. The WARC files are imported to the servers of the University of Innsbruck, where they are archived in XML-format
Since the end of the project in 2014, new sources can be added by request for research purposes. The term “Author Homepage” describes a form of Internet self-presentation used by authors. Generally referring to websites created prior to the development of Web 2.0, it primarily describes a static publication format that authors use in a self-determined manner as a means of presenting their literary work to a public audience.
The aim of the project was to archive, document and analyze a selection of Author Homepages from German speaking countries. The selection was pre-decided in cooperation with relevant Institutions (literary archives, libraries etc.). The results are displayed in a database and a public digital archive.

We only archive websites and provide public access to archived pages, when we have a written consent of the right holders. All rights remain with the authors and right holders of the archived content. We do not pursue any direct or indirect economic or commercial purpose, but solely aim to generate scientific and educational value.

For reasons of practicality, it was necessary to reduce the scope of this project to a selection of approximately 100 homepages. The collection should not be understood as a statement about the quality of the homepages. Our aim was to arrive at a selection that is as versatile and significant as possible. Representative examples of homepages were selected according to the following criteria:
- Geographic aspects (a selection proportionate to the population in each German speaking country)
- The literary scene (degree of popularity, reputation in the literary scene through awards, literary criticism, etc.
- The archival area (cooperation with other archives and consideration of their wishes)
In addition, homepages have been included in the selection based on how they illustrate the author’s work and self-perception through their content, style of presentation, and/or communicative options.
Further, more recent forms of online presentation, for example weblogs, have been acknowledged. However, it is difficult to differentiate clearly between weblogs that include characteristics of Author Homepages on the one hand and online diaries on the other hand. For this reason, it has been decided to include only those blogs in our collection that contain information about the authors’ biography/bibliography and thus assume the certain functions of a homepage. In addition, social networks have been included in our research, for instance by analyzing in detail authors’ public Facebook pages. Given that their content is independently determined by the authors themselves, these pages also function as and display characteristics of an Author’s Homepage
In many cases, Author Homepages are operated by the publisher. This form of Author Homepages was generally not considered in this project because they do not allow conclusions regarding the self-perception of the author or his work. In this project, we have been only interested in publisher websites, which were implemented in consultation with the author and/or contain independent content (own domain, podcasts, texts by the author etc.).
