This story was one of those that once you start, you do not put it down. It keeps the readers' interests. The story is great, characters interesting, and believable. In fact, it's scary to think this, but there are really people like this out there. Not necessarily serial killers, but murderous people with all the wrong justifications for their deeds. Here, you feel empathy for the main character and a sense that her victim are (mostly, usually) getting what they deserve in the scheme of goes around-goes around. The episode regarding the Iraq War veteran is one that moves a person as well as chills the mind and senses.
It would be an intense movie, but to hit the screen, either the big one or a home screen, it would have to be done as either an X-rated item, and that would make it stupid and ruin it by cutting the plot away to simply fit in the "activity" scenes, or, on the other hand, for a main line motion picture, be reduced in its' plot line too much to be as effective as it is as a novel.

Not exactly Matthew Scudder, the redoubtable NYC private detective, at work in this story of a disturbed female who must have revenge on any men who have been intimate with her. Strangely enough, Kittie, traumatized as a teenager, seeks one night stands and then manages to kill the men in a variety of ways. She needs to repeat this extreme action to extirpate her earlier suffering. If she cannot do it at the time, she hunts them down and tries again.
The reader does not get the grit and grim of NYC in this book. It is strictly all about the psyche, planning, and action of the girl. She is absolutely not a sympathetic character. Oddly enough, she is never under suspicion in this story; she is not on the radar of law enforcement. The story becomes repetitious and just not particularly compelling.

This hard case crime release comprises the complete saga of Kit Tolliver, crazed and seriously damaged sex killer , cursed with the burden of killing every man she has ever slept with. Talk about an original plot! It sounds crazy enough, but anyone familiar with the world class writing skills of Mr Block will cease to be amazed but will find themselves fully immersed in the damaged world the anti heroine finds herself in.
Chapter by chapter, Mr Block reveals aspects of Tolliver's psyche to the reader, explaining her actions and beliefs in a convincing, entertaining and most significantly, highly moving manner. The stories are not funny - how could they be? - but once you are over the shock of the events transcribed in each chapter, you may well find yourself rooting for Katherine and glad that the police are unable to even make an appearance, let alone come close to apprehending the kinky serial killer.
The book's highlight comes in part seven, with strong emotional bonding between Kit and her victim as well as the reader. The ending to this particular case is macabre and yet borderline hysterically funny. Don't laugh too hard, however, unless you want to find yourself being analysed by the family psychologist, as well.
Other readers have criticised the piece meal presentation of the stories, especially readers who are ignorant of their alternative existence in short form. The criticism should be pointed squarely at the feet of the marketing department of the publisher of this amazing series of crime novels, instead of Mr Block. They were written as short stories, and probably need to be read as such. Devoted fans of the world famous crafter of mystery fiction, however, can just as easily read this as a single novel and still get just as much out of it as the short story aficionados do.
In summary, I award this new release a well deserved four stars. One more classic to add to your library, and one more feather in the cap of the 20th century's greatest living crime novelist.

This is nearly the perfect Hard Case Crime novel, a fun fast-paced guilty pleasure with plenty of over-the-top sex and violence.
Kit Tolliver is the over-stimulated female version of one of Block’s other characters, John Keller from the Hit Man series. She is an unrepentant black-widow serial killer who seduces men only to kill them in exotic fashion afterwards. The story stretches credibility at times. How can a woman leave so much DNA at so many crime scenes and not be caught eventually? But, c’mon, this is not supposed to be CSI! It’s a cross between the adults-only Nightshade Books of the 1950’s and the much-beloved Gold Medal pulp crime paperbacks of the 1960’s.
My only quibble is that it became obvious this novel started out as a series of short stories. It could have used a stronger editorial influence. Many “episodes” contain needless repetition of earlier events and some odd time lapses are not fully explained.

"Trying to regrow her psychic Hyman by killing every man she'd ever slept with." Seriously? I've read and enjoyed all of the Scudder series and all of the Burglar series novels. I'm not sure what Lawrence Block was thinking with this one! A woman was sexually traumatized as a child by her father. Consequently, she kills every man she sleeps with as a psychological surrogate for her father. This is good in theory but it just rambles deep into the absurd. Then, to pair this violent cold-blooded psychological wreck up with a jolly over-sexed lesbian-wannabe, who wants to share in the kill, is just silly!

I like Pulp Fiction, but this is poor, the continuity is all over the place and by having the same sex scenes repeated every three pages in a 330 page book doesn’t make it sexually exciting, it makes it just boring.

Block's style changes - erotic thriller

Lawrence Block - the plotter supremo, changes from hero to heroine in this black comedic thriller. Sexually fantastic, the plot twists its way through sordid one night stands with deadly results. The heroine's dark child hood experience invigorates her murderous needs and appetites - a good holiday read.
