Endless depravity, Block seems to love the worst about NYC....

This is not a feel good book, and a good example of why a lot of folks don't like NYC. There is a lot of depravity and alienation, godlessness and distance from humane kindness... in short, so much absence of love, the caring, warm, human kind we are all built to feel and express. Block is in love with this book, which tells us too much about him, and none of it is good. He goes for the most prurient and degrading possibilities within his characters, and the result is a mess. The Matthew Scudder series is his best stuff, and it gets so predictable so quickly you want to see something different out of him, but this glorification of the worst things the city can beat people into, or that city people with no god or sense of love and kindness can beat into each other, is puzzling since he seems to think he's written a book that shows a great city. There is no one in this book you'd want to have dinner with, much less sleep with. If there is, seek professional help, and God. I feel sorry for the writer, but apparently he is drawn to evil, and thinks that's a great thing. Redemption and realization of a caring god, and hope for some of these characters would be a much higher calling for his talents. Oh yeah, spoiler alert: if all that negativity about the city he "loves" wasn't enough to turn me off, at the end, he doesn't even understand how a semi-auto handgun works, and mistakenly has it function like a revolver. Ruins what should be a key scene at the climax of this horrible novel. How does a guy writing crime fiction for decades not know how guns work?

Good characters, good story

This is a really enjoyable stand alone novel by veteran mystery writer, Lawrence Block about New York City in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 disaster. The book is filled with interesting characters like the novelist who is accused of murder and then cashes in on his notoriety with a big book contract, the art gallery owner who makes sex her art and the police commissioner who falls under her spell. (Okay, the book does contain some vivid sex scenes but I thought they were tastefully done and very much in the context of the story)

All of these characters and several others are woven together throughout the book and are all a part of the "small town" of New York in the days after the horrible terrorist attack. A real page turner.

Many years ago I read several of Block's softcore pornographic novels from the earliest days of his career, and it was clear that he was just learning his craft. As he did so well -- his Matt Scudder novels are the pinnacle of the type. But he has taken his craft into the neo-noir/porn market by way of the serial killer thriller and not improved on his earliest work.
Misogyny here or homophobia? No one comes off very well. The art gallery owner bears no resemblance to any New York gallery owner I've ever known or read of, and her creative nymphomania is simply embarrassing. The novelist accused of committing the first of the murders is more interested in the proceeds from the sale of his novel (and backlist, thank you) than he is in whether he will be convicted of the crime. Maybe the auction conducted by his agent is interesting, but what it's doing in a suspense novel is anyone's guess.
I suspect Block hoped to write a book as an homage to his City, but he seems to have been distracted by stray thoughts -- and a jumble of loose ends. His Scudder novels do a much better job, particularly When the Sacred Gin Mill Closes. And Jim Fusilli's books capture New York's Downtown better -- they're grittier, you can feel the pavement under your feet. Try Closing Time. Now that's a portrait of the City.

HOMAGE TO A GREAT CITY

I like to think of Small Town: A Novel of New York as Lawrence Block's homage to New York in this post 9/11 tale. His love of the city is obvious as he brings in several disparate characters and shows the effects on their lives. However, once the gay cleaning guy served his purpose as the discoverer of bodies, he vanished into the woodwork. The erotica was so out of place in this story that it felt uncomfortable. Overall, well-written but not Lawrence Block's best.

Well wasn't this a thriller. The characters were a mixture. Fran was sure a victim. Poor guy. Susan turned him into a girl? Wow. Big John seemed to come out okay. Many times...many, many times. The Bobsey twins, the writer/agent got dragged out of the closet. Again by the fearsome Susan. Wow, what a broad. The neighborhood garbage guy probably wasn't even safe from her wiley charms. Again, Mr. Block is the Grand Master. Good book.
