I first read O'Brien's book several years ago (in an earlier edition) on the recommendation from a collector who is also a fan of Jim Thompson. O'Brien is insightful, informative, engaging and right on in his assessment of an era of paperbacks and pulp noir that will never be truly recreated. What a wonderful work of literary criticism, beautifully illustrated and classically rendered. A treasure for the noir lover! I have it right next to my first edition original of The Killer Inside Me.

Ruined by poor quality of artwork reproductions.
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 29. April 2020Verifizierter Kauf
Edition being reviewed: Da Capo Press 1997 paperback
This is, in essence, a treatise on the hardboiled novel and the related phenomenon of paperback books as they reflect and, in the minds of some, helped shape American culture through many years of the 20th century.
Some of the writing comes off as overly pretentious in the author's selection of words and phrases. And a few of the ideas expressed are a bit overwrought with little basis in fact.
A great deal of Hardboiled America is devoted to the original cover art adorning mid-20th century paperbacks; as well as to the talented artists responsible for their creation. O'Brien spends many pages explaining how the colors, the artistic nuance and the publisher's strategically chosen blurbs make, in many cases, the covers more interesting and significant than the content of the paperback novels themselves. Which makes it all the more incomprehensible as to why the scores of illustrations of cover art are so shoddily reproduced. All are in black and white and of such poor quality it is impossible to discern any detail whatsoever.
Bottom line: Hardboiled America rates 3 stars for the history lesson and 1 star for the atrocious quality of the cover art reproductions. So overall, a 2 star rating. Which is to say this edition is not recommended.

HEADS UP!!
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 12. Februar 2020Verifizierter Kauf
I should have paid more attention to the other reviews. The paperback covers reproduced for this edition are unbelievably low quality. Not only are they not in color, they look like they were printed on an old xerox printer or something. They are very grainy and there is very little contrast making for a washed out , smudgy mess. Since looking at the covers is half the point i really dont see how this was considered acceptable.

For Film Noir or Hardboiled Fiction Fans
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 22. November 2013Verifizierter Kauf
As a film noir buff, I had to get this book! I learned that the paperback was invented around 1940, and discovered some great writers of the hardboiled paperback school. The author also spends time discussing the cover art and artists, which is great because that's what sold the books! Recommended.

Literary walk down the mean streets of hard boiled fiction
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 25. Juli 2016Verifizierter Kauf
Fantastic look at an important genre in American fiction. If you plan on writing mystery fiction yourself or just want a guide to help you find more books you will enjoy, this is the book for you. I have learned a lot from it on the elements that are crucial to writing fast paced detective thrillers. The hints and tip s you will pick up from studying the past masters of the genre are invaluable.

best read while sipping bourbon, dragging on a Lucky Strike, and wearing a fedora...alone.
