One of the Best Books of 2012
One of the Best Books of 2012--St. Louis Post-Dispatch
"A solid addition to Stephen Hunter's sniper series, made more engaging by its invocation of current events and political posturing. I join his other fans in hoping he has another one already in the works."--"The Washington Times"
"Any thriller in which Middle Eastern terrorists whack Santa on the first page is bound to be exciting. As always, Hunter has crafted a fast-paced and all-too-plausible telling of our worst nightmares coming true. Ray Cruz is a worthy successor to Swagger. Hunter's fans, along with new readers, will enjoy the violent battle between Cruz and the bad guys."--"Library Journal"
"Black Friday [is] on the cusp of becoming blood-soaked Friday. . . . Among the shoppers, albeit reluctantly, is Ray Cruz, a retired marine sniper, son of the iconic marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger, whose valorous exploits Hunter has richly detailed ("Dead Zero", 2010, etc.). . . . Snipers and SWAT teams gather, but only one man is in an advantageous tactical position, behind enemy lines, as it were. Only one man, but he's Bob Lee Swagger's son, and what a good thing it is that the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree."--"Kirkus Reviews"
"Combining elements of the locked-room mystery, the disaster novel, and the lock-and-load thriller, Hunter produces a remarkably gripping tale, building character (the captives, the bureaucrats, and the "terrorists" all get compelling backstories) every bit as convincingly as he drives the narrative to its High Noon-style finale."--"Booklist" (starred review)
"Fast-paced...fearsome."--"Publishers Weekly"
"Hunter's writing is sharp, detailed and laced with enough offhand wit to keep readers from sinking into the general gore and Islam-bashing. . . . Hunter has produced a fast, gratifying read."--"The Houston Chronicle"
"Stephen Hunter didn't invent the high-action thriller. But, as he once again demonstrates in the lightning-paced "Soft Target", he might as well have. . . . "Soft Target" is "Die Hard" with a brain and a plan. A lean, action-packed tale that begs to be read in a single sitting."--"The Providence Journal"
"Stephen Hunter spent years reviewing movies for "The Washington Post". That work gave him a keen sense of pacing and timing. The evidence shows up in "Soft Target", which unrolls a complicated and grabby plot in just 256 tense pages. And Hunter packs in a surprise with the identity and motive of the individual behind the terrorist attack."--"St. Louis Post-Dispatch"

This book is unworthy of the name Stephen Hunter. The plot is laughable, the writing stilted, and the whole thing takes less time to read than a good newspaper. Waste of time and money.

"fast reading" wie fast alles von Hunter
Aber nicht eines seiner besten Werke , hoffe das ist kein Nachlassen der Kreativität nach immerhin 10 oder so Büchern

Rezension aus Deutschland vom 20. August 2012
That plot is way too simple and never ever anything really creative happens, not to mention that everybody, good or bad, behaves totally unrealistic and stupid. Don't know where to begin. I had the impression that Hunter hoped to get that book made into a Die Hard movie, cause that's what it is more or less - of course without the good stuff. Just a huge closed building with a thousand hostages, bad guys with guns, stupid police on the outside and one hero on the inside saving the day. Only reason to read the book would be to complete the coverage of the Swagger family saga (NKY's in the media heli above and Bob Lee's vietnamese son is in the building). Maybe the worst of all the Swagger books. Did I mention that the inner logic of the plot doesn't work ? Well, it doesn't. Big surprise as the bad guy is a computer wizzard which uses Phosgen (can you believe that) to smoke out the security ... Oh, sniping is done at 50 yards blue on blue :-).

Poor effort
Rezension aus dem Vereinigten Königreich vom 23. Januar 2013Verifizierter Kauf
I have enjoyed most of the author's books to varying degrees, but this is without doubt the worst of his output.
The flaws and problems are many, in what is basically Die Hard in a shopping mall and Ray Cruz being the man in the spotlight to stop an attack. There is very little that is `right' with it, so let me focus on the downside: It's short, about 250 pages so quite expensive for a slim volume, it has an observational style of narrative that is annoying, the dialogue is utterly woeful and there are considerable logic gaps in the rather bizarre plot I detected a slight sense of smugness in the writing which I have not noticed before, maybe this is a political nod to officials that say a lot and do a little but it didn't really work and started to grate somewhat. It's all a bit strange, as I really enjoyed the previous Ray Cruz story and bought this on the back of it.
If this had been published as a fit of fun e-book for a couple of quid then it might have worked, but as a `proper' published novel it most certainly doesn't.
