More about Joseph Conrad
Born into an impoverished noble Polish family in Ukraine, Conrad was orphaned by the age of 11. At the age of 16, he went to France to begin a career at sea. Following a failed suicide attempt at the age of 21, he went to England, continuing his nautical career from there for several years.
Conrad learned English from his shipmates and when he finally gave up the sea at the age of 36, he resolved to settle in the country and take citizenship there. He began his literary career then, drawing on his experiences at sea and on a trip to the Congo, which had deeply affected his idea view of the world.
Despite being recognised as a great writer during his lifetime, Conrad never enjoyed much material success. Nevertheless, he is now recognised as one of the great prose stylists.
