More about Barbi Marković
Barbara Markovic, born in 1980 in Belgrade, studied German language and literature in Belgrade and Vienna. She worked as an editor for the Belgrade publisher, Rende. She has lived in Vienna since 2005 where she continues her German studies. In 2006, her novel “Ausgehen” (Serbian “Izlaženje”) was published and won honours for the text awarded by FM4. The jury’s verdict: “Barbi Markovic’s approach to the topic of “ausgehen” (‘going out’) is wonderfully appropriate for this year’s jury.” Her novel “Izlaženje” (in Mascha Dabic’s excellent German translation) recounts the story of the protagonist who no longer sees any sense in going out. From Bernhard’s arrival at Steinhof, the final retreat to the TV screen is described in Markovic’s account. Staying home is better than experiencing the coercion and rituals of going out. Death to the disco!
