[ book tip by ] With his three novels The Slope (2001), Minor Characters (2003) and Encirclement (2007), Carl Frode Tiller has established himself among the new generation of Norwegian writers as one of the most original and ambitious.

With profound psychological insight and a rare degree of stylistic mastery, he gives a voice to a wide spectrum of characters in modern Norwegian rural and small urban environments. Tiller has been awarded the European Union Prize for Literature for Encirclement (Innsirkling, 2007), which is the first volume of a forthcoming trilogy.

With the aid of three independent narrators, the novel manages to draw an outline round its own absent main character. In so doing, the narrators also portray each other, and frighteningly deep schisms are revealed between the images they provide of themselves and how they are seen by the others. In this way, Carl Frode Tiller is able to raise fundamental social and existential issues by means of an exceptionally sensitive mode of writing.
