[ המלצה מאת Christine Rigler ] Karim can converse with things. Hardly has he entered the new boarding school for the first time when all kinds of things turn to him with worries and concerns. But how is he supposed to be enthusiastic about showing tables and chairs more respect without everyone laughing at him? The others think that he talks to himself when he is conversing with things. The situation dramatically intensifies shortly before the school fete. Tarik Bary first published this children‟s book in German translation. Two years later, the Arabic original was published – until then, children‟s books were a little known genre in Egypt.
The release of the Arabic edition coincided with the launch of a website featuring illustrations for the book which Bary commissioned with a team of illustrators. They created comics where Aladdin‟s world of the magic lamp coincided with the universe of horror films. The cultural mix involves a contemporary political dimension – Bary‟s fantasy-rich story is a magic fairy tale, a boarding school story about bullying, tyranny and violence and therefore masquerades mainly as political literature. It is an attempt to make children understand corruption which has a stranglehold both on private and public life in Egypt.
