Lavinia Greenlaw was born in London, where she has lived for most of her life. She has published three books of poems, most recently Minsk (2003) which was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot, Forward and Whitbread Poetry Prizes. Her two novels are Mary George of Allnorthover, which won France’s Prix du Premier Roman Etranger, and An Irresponsible Age. She has also collaborated with the photographic artist Garry Fabian Miller on Thoughts of a Night Sea, and edited Signs and Humours: the poetry of medicine for the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Her most recent book is a memoir, The Importance of Music to Girls.

Her awards include an Arts Council of England Writers’ Award, a Forward Prize and a fellowship from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA). She has held residencies at the Science Museum, the Royal Festival Hall, Aldeburgh Festival and the Royal Society of Medicine, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Her work for BBC radio includes programmes about the Arctic and the Baltic, the solstices and equinoxes, Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Bishop, and Dutch landscape painting. She has also written and adapted several dramas for radio, including Virginia Woolf’s Night and Day. She has written three opera libretti as well as song texts. Other commissions she has undertaken include writing about Constable for Tate Britain, Christine Borland for Bookworks, Garry Fabian Miller for the V&A, and the misericords of Beverley Minster, as well as a sequence about numbers for Channel 4 and a poem to mark the centenary of the Theory of Relativity for the Science Museum. And she writes for the weblog www.poetryfoundation.org.

She has taught on the MA in Creative Writing at Goldsmiths College for five years and is now Professor of Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.
