Born in 1968 in Bregenz, grew up in Wolfurt / Vorarlberg.
Studied German Philology, Comparative Literature, and Ancient History in Innsbruck and Vienna, graduating from Vienna University in 1993.
1996 and 2004: took part in the Ingeborg Bachmann Competition.
1997: published his debut novel, Kleine Schule des Karussellfahrens.
2005: awarded the German Book Prize for the novel Es geht uns gut (We Are Doing Fine).
Lives as a freelance writer in Vienna and Wolfurt / Vorarlberg.
