Born in 1948 in Linz, Mitgutsch taught German and American literature at Austrian and American universities.
She has received numerous prizes and awards for her literary work, including the Anton Wildgans Prize, the Solothurn Literature Prize, the national Republic of Austria Award of Appreciation for Literature, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Salzburg.
She has translated poetry since the 1970s and has written ten novels to date, which have been translated into many languages.
