Bund Deutscher Amateurtheater (BDAT) was founded 1892 and is one of the biggest associations for performing arts in Europe today. Being publicly recognized and supported by federal funds, BDAT represents German amateur theatre nationwide and on international levels in the field of arts, culture, politics and society. The basis for BDAT’s cultural and educational policy work is the membership of nearly 2400 theatre ensembles. Nationwide teaching programmes and further education seminars qualify our members and deepen their theatre knowledge. On an international level, BDAT in alliance with Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft (BAG) Spiel & Theater mutually form the National Centre of the worldwide International Amateur Theatre Association (AITA/IATA). Among others, BDAT is a member of the Central European Committee (CEC) of AITA/IATA, of EFAT (European Forum for Amateur theatre), of Arbeitsgemeinschaft deutschsprachiger Amateurtheaterverbände (AddA) and of the Internationales Theaterinstitut (ITI).
In October 2016 BDAT began a co-operation with the Institut für Theaterwissenschaft Universität Leipzig/Centre of Competence for Theatre.
