Fiction Canteen is an event to share ideas about your writing, get feedback, be inspired by others’ texts, and take part in a compered discussion with the audience. It is a space to grow into the new and to promote voices that may go unheard. Submit your works-in-progress to us! We are hosted by club ausland in Prenzlauer Berg, a long-standing venue in the Berlin literary and music scene.

We look for strong, original voices. We support and include authors who identify as LGBTQI*, as well as writers of colour, and those with different physical abilities. This does not mean that you can only submit texts if you feel addressed by these categories. It does mean that we perceive a need to redress an imbalance in the Berlin literary scene.

Who we are

Lucy Jones translates German fiction including by the authors Anke Stelling, Theresia Enzensberger, Brigitte Reimann, Annemarie Schwarzenbach and Ronald Schernikau, and co-manages the Berlin collective Transfiction. She also translates journalism and writes short stories, some of which have been published in Berlin’s SAND Journal and the Pigeon Pages NYC, who nominated her for a Pushcart Prize in 2018.

Yuma Carpenter-New manages social media and event organisation for Fiction Canteen. Yuma is a poet living in Berlin since 2018. After growing up in the American Midwest, they studied written arts at Bard College in upstate New York. There they completed a creative senior thesis under the direction of poet Ann Lauterbach, for which they were awarded the Academy of American Poets Prize. Since then, they’ve worked as a literary editor, a freelance translator, an artist assistant, and the coordinator’s assistant at Berlin’s Miss Read Art Book Fair. They have poems published on poets.org and in Bard Papers and Lux Literary Magazine.
