Album Review

After tenures in overlooked '90s outfits like Ednaswap and Failure, the members of Los Angeles' Autolux joined forces. The fruits of their labor have yielded Future Perfect, an album that triumphs as it defies expectations. Meshing the guitar blur of the shoegazer movement (Lush, My Bloody Valentine, Pale Saints) with traces of indie rock royalty (Sonic Youth, Ivy), it's hardly what you might expect producer T-Bone Burnett to stand behind. But the trio excels as it thumbs its nose at the new wave revival movement of the early 21st century via the hypnotic "Sugarless," the lilting and riff-sturdy "Trigger," and the menacing whirl of "Blanket." If the aforementioned numbers highlight Greg Edwards' guitar antics and bassist/vocalist Eugene Goreshter's twee vocal approach, the band's secret weapon is drummer Carla Azar, who is not just skilled behind the kit. Azar's pipes sound eerily similar to Kim Deal's Pixies efforts on "Angry Candy" and "Here Comes Everybody," which are arguably the band's finest moments. ~ John D. Luerssen, Rovi

Future Perfect, indeed

Wow. It's a capital injustice that Autolux doesn't receive the attention it deserves.

Autolux rocks

I first heard of Autolux in 2005, when they opened shows for Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor heard them and was very impressed with their sound, and wanted them as an opening act. I checked out their debut album soon after, and it's one of the few albums that I keep coming back to over and over. This album just never gets old. Personal favorites are "Blanket" and "Angry Candy", but the whole album is just awesome.

a magical journey!

i had no idea who this band was- i went to a SHELLAC show in ca, and this band opened the show. im not sure how they did it, but while they played, they somehow had thier sound coming at you in total stereo. i was in awe of how good they sounded in the little dive where the show was. one of the more original bands i have seen in a long time. i picked up the CD a few months later, and it was just as good to hear the cd. great songs- if you listen long enough you will start to sway alittle bit to the stylish groove this band has. a very talanted squad.- hopefully there is newer stuff coming- the song on the compilation is really good too.

With a unique sound that samples equally from electronica, noise pop, post-punk, and shoegaze, Autolux formed in 2000 in Los Angeles. Singer/bassist Eugene Goreshter had first met former Ednaswap drummer Carla Azar while collaborating on the score for Dario Fo's play Accidental Death of an Anarchist, and following the addition of former Failure guitarist Greg Edwards, the trio made its live debut that summer at the Silverlake Lounge. Upon releasing a self-produced EP, Demonstration, in the spring...
