Back in 1990

My father had this as a part of his "LaserDisc" collection back in the 80's and I was showing off to my girlfriend (I was 16 years old then) the system - we were in love - and we loved the music as well. Well, we now married and I just bought this album on ITMS and we are still very much in love... Put on the fire, cozy up with some egg-nog and play this in the background...you'll love it.

Some songs never age.

This album has come to really define the Christmas season for me. Every year, around mid-November, I pull this CD out (along with volumes II and III) and begin playing it again, and it is this music that puts me back in the holiday spirit each year. The classy, cozy opening of "Little Drummer Boy" soothes like a mug of eggnog next to a snapping fire; the tinkling notes of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" fall like snowflakes to the ears as decorations are unpacked, hung and smiled over again. "O, Tannenbaum" is the soft laughter and turtleneck-sweater comfort of a Christmas party among good friends. The album continues this way, little vignettes of warm memories of Christmases past, until Grusin himself weighs in 'sotto voce' with the graceful, timeless "Some Children See Him," the crystalline glistening of moonlight on snow that soothingly whispers "God's in His heaven, all's right with the world." Sorry to get so sappy/lyrical about this, but I've had a very personal connection to this music since I discovered it in my college roommate's collection over 12 years ago, and I've always felt this music is a truly wonderful gathering of jazz musicians sharing their unique interpretations of fifteen ageless Christmas carols. Volumes II and III are worth pursuing and owning as well, though they can be difficult to find. If you must choose between the three, however, Volume I stands as the truly best, in my opinion, compilation of Christmas jazz you can find; year after year, it only grows on you more.

Ritenour and Szakcsi tracks mislabeled

Just a heads-up to potential single-track purchasers: The Lee Ritenour and Szakcsi tracks are swapped. Track 6 on the CD is indeed Ritenour's lovely "White Christmas" (mostly a fingerstyle nylon string guitar piece), but track 6 here, though listed as that track, is actually track 10 on the CD, Szakcsi's "Midnight Clear." And vice versa. I've come across problems like this before on iTunes, and unfortunately Apple has no good mechanism for users reporting such problems before purchasing. Ritenour's and Grusin's tracks are particularly lovely; quiet and wistful....
