iTunes Editors’ Notes

To bring attention to the human rights abuses taking place in Darfur, Sudan and to raise money for the cause, Amnesty International presents this collection of John Lennon compositions performed by today’s (2007) recording artists. Lennon was a strong artistic presence who stamped his music with strong personal sentiments; taking on his idiosyncratic vision offers artists interesting choices. U2 streamline the choppy, anarchic rhythms of “Instant Karma.” R.E.M. stick to the ethereal vibe of “#9 Dream.” Christina Aguilera takes real chances with an aggressive take on Lennon’s extremely personal and self-pitying “Mother.” Jack Johnson’s acoustic finger-picked “Imagine” invigorates Lennon’s most well-known chestnut. The Flaming Lips trip out “(Just Like) Starting Over.” Best, Regina Spektor isolates the gorgeous melody lining “Real Love” to chilling effect. Aerosmith featuring Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars do what they can with the sloganeering of “Give Peace a Chance.” Los Lonely Boys turn “Whatever Gets You Through the Night” into one of their own. Jackson Browne sounds at home with the acoustic ballad “Oh My Love.” Overall, this is far more entertaining than most tribute / cover albums.

Good cause, but sorry

As you'd imagine with such a diverse group there are hits and misses. And you're taking on a genius - so the misses are pretty dominant (Duran, why do this to yourself? Again?) But there are some fantastic suprises tucked in here. The Flaming Lips turn one of JL's lighter singles into something achingly beautiful. And Christina Aguilera's Mother is fantastic. I've never been a fan but a tougher CA with a rougher backing is a direction she should look into (maybe with the Winehouse phenom, she will). Pick and choose. Again for a great cause.

Why can't u look at the positive?

Forget all the bad songs, just think of the positive. there is a genocide going on in darfur as we speak, and people are complaining about bad songs on an album designed to help those in need. the point of this album is to save lives. so its a shame that not every song is unbelievable, but most are pretty decent and the money is going to an unbelievably important cause. so for that, i give this album 5 stars

Amazing, but why didn't itunes advertise they dont have ALL the songs

this is rather wierd, i bought the CD for the bonus Cure tracks, NOT on itunes, and the itunes cd has 13 MORE songs than the regular cd, but no raveonettes or cure. Sonds like a great cause, but still a bit annoying, it should not be a requirement to spend 40 bucks to get the itunes version and the regular version in a indie store
