Editors’ Notes

This 2005 album by drummer Paul Motion, guitarist Bill Frisell, and saxophonist Joe Lovano finds the trio 20-plus years into a singularly unique collaboration between three highly individual players. The elder statesman here, Motion is an elliptical player prone to playing melody and color rather than time, while Lovano’s dry saxophone melodies are a perfect counterpoint to Frisell’s liquid guitar textures. In this jazz trio, standard concepts of harmony and rhythm are handled by all with no formula for who does what and when. Thus, Motion’s songs (he's credited with all the originals) sound hard to pin down without ever being less than engaging. Indeed, there seem to be mysterious spells cast on tunes like “Osmosis Part III” and the swooping “Sketches.” Sometimes a cover can offer insight into a unique-sounding band, yet the dreamy version of the title track by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein (inscrutably) shows more ideas sublimated to the trio's vision.

Customer Reviews

Paul is a master

This is a beautiful album. It is calm, lyrical, and soothing, yet still endowed with the uneasy billowing tension that defines Motian's music. It reaches a level more jazz musicians should shoot for. Motian brings out the best in those around him. Lovano and Frisell excel here.

I Have The Room Above Her

This is a recording by the Paul Motian trio, consisting of Paul Motian, Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano. It is NOT a Bill Frisell recording! I wish iTunes would either hire someone who knows the music to organize their offerings or allow users who know the music to correct mistakes. We are left to complain in the reviews, and pray that an Apple employee with the courage and authority will make the appropriate changes. By the way, this is a fantastic record, perhaps the best studio outing ever by this prolific trio. The playing is inventive but unforced, and the interplay telepathic. Superb.

Chamber Jazz

This set by Mr.s Lovano, Frisell and Motian finds each of them at the top of his craft. The pacing and timing is exquisite and at times resembles jazz chamber music, with each musician allowing room for the other two to gently fill and float. Mr. Lovano's tone is well suited to many of the longing, yearning romantic themes of the songs and the gentle underplay and support behind him by guitar and drums is never, never in the way. Mr. Frisell, is as always, a master of melody and his fills and leads both capture the same spirit as those of Mr. Lovano. Mr. Motian is, simply put, a drummer of rare feeling and sparse but perfect timing. The three of them together leave enough open space for the listener to relax into the music and feel a part of it, rather than a spectator to it.

The defining characteristic of any given jazz musician is frequently his sound. The more control a player has over the nature of that sound, the more likely he is to project a distinctive musical personality. For example, a saxophonist has virtually unlimited physical control of the sound that comes through his horn, and therefore a wide range of tonal expression at his command, which partially explains the disproportionate number of saxophonists in the pantheon of great jazz musicians. On the other...
