iTunes Editors’ Notes
Commissioned to create a “21st-century song cycle inspired by select classical pieces spanning the last 400 years,” Tori Amos, true to her muse, turns it into a classically influenced Tori Amos album. She works variations on Bach, Debussy, Mendelssohn, Satie, Schubert, Schumann and others. At her beloved Bosendorfer piano with orchestration arranged by John Philip Shenale, Amos creates a concept album that’s difficult to explain quickly. The dramatic piano flourishes from “Battle of Trees” create a genuine tension over its eight minutes. “Fearlessness,” based on Enrique Granados’ 12 Spanish Dancers, is a melodic feast. “Edge of the Moon” is a solemn poem. Her 11-year-old daughter is in strong voice and together they make tracks such as “Cactus Practice,” “Job’s Coffin” and “The Chase” special moments for mother and child. It’s a one- of-a-kind piece that should please hardcore Amos fans who have no less interest in whether or not there are any radio hits. The Deluxe Edition includes videos for “Carry” and “Nautical Twilight” that visually evoke the music’s heart and display Amos at work.
Customer Reviews
Her best days...
Are a little behind her, unfortunately.
The kid just ran out of juice after Boys for Pele. Everything up to and including Boys is incredible, but she hasn't really lit a fire under a song since. Still, with that body of work alone, she is one of my favorites. Little Earthquakes blew me away and still does.
An easily under-appreciated masterpiece
Fans have been ragging on Tori because she changed direction and speed after the 90s. It's what makes her genuine in my eyes. Some established artists, let's say the Rolling Stones, keep riffing on the same formula that put them on top, which is fine. Other artists, like Tori, allow themselves to grow and experiment even when it leads them astray from the broken trail. I respect her for that.
In my opinion, not since Choirgirl has she made an unconventional album that has hit the mark on so many levels. Another reviewer contemptuously called it a "musical", as if it were campy and beneath her. I'm here to tell you it is anything but that.
The narrative throughout the album is deftly multilayered, weaving a couple's nighttime spat with more epic struggles between the elements in Celtic myth and, possibly, with the transformation of Ireland during Christianization. Call Night of Hunters a song cycle, maybe a concept album, but *not* a musical; especially not in the derogatory sense used by that reviewer.
Beside the narrative, if you listen closely, the music itself is not only beautiful but also strikingly impressive. Tori successfully riffs on the classical greats with such grace it's easy to miss how truly difficult that is. This album showcases Tori as the master of her musical ability. Other albums are still top on my list for pure raw lyricism, but, in my opinion, Night of Hunters schools them all with its expert composition.
A note to the casual listener, the songs aren't catchy tunes you'll want to rock out to. At least I won't be putting in Night of Hunters when I just want to nod my head while in my car. But whenever I'm in a quiet contemplative mood, and have the time to enjoy an entire album, Night of Hunters will be the likely choice.
How Ya Like Me Now Peabody?
Tori Amos has come full circle. As a child musical prodigy, she attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music. She was asked to leave the school at age 11. It seems she couldn't color within their musical lines.
Tori's musical genius is well known to those who have followed her over the last twenty some odd years. She has written some of the most complex and beautiful music I've ever heard. And as a loyal EWF (ears with feet), I won't pretend to be unbiased with my little review. Tori's music is truly precious to me.
With this new work of art, Tori goes in a direction many have hoped for for a long time. This is a concept album of sorts. There is a merging of classical and contemporary music into a true lyrical masterpiece. Classical song "cycles" + Tori's complex arrangements and lyrics = musical nirvana.
Although a conceptual work, it's an intimate look at Tor's world. As usual her husband Mark is the sound engineer. Her daughter Tash and her niece provide beautiful vocals to several of the songs. I can only imagine what a wonderful creative environment they share.
This work will likely introduce many to the world of classical music. And I believe it will garner Tori a whole new generation of fans. It's so unique and of such quality that it will most likely not receive the critical recognition it deserves (i.e. Grammys). It's not generic enough to appeal to the masses. But for those who get it, pleasure awaits.
And so it seems Tori has returned to her classical roots. But what has grown from those roots is far more than those snobs at Peabody could have ever imagined.
