iTunes Editors’ Notes

Had The Very Best of Prince simply gathered Prince’s radio chart-toppers, it would include flash-in-the-pan songs like 1989’s “Batdance” and 1995’s "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World." Instead, this collection offers deeper cuts like the socio-politically funky “Sign 'O' the Times” and the soulful "Money Don't Matter 2 Night," which contrasts an uplifting melody with lyrics that touch on poverty, money, and greed. Of course it wouldn’t be right to title this comp The Very Best of Prince without a heavy dose of his household hits. That’s why it opens with his 1979 disco nugget “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” followed by the pre-Y2K anthem "1999." Other highlights include the steamy serenade “Little Red Corvette,” the catchy “Raspberry Beret," and the emotionally urgent title-track ballad from his 1984 film debut, Purple Rain. But it’s in the more energetic standouts like “Let’s Go Crazy” and “I Would Die 4 U” where we get a better glimpse of the man’s talent for crafting perfect pop. “When Doves Cry” serves as a reminder that Prince is also a stellar guitarist.

Good introduction to Prince's career

This album would be the one to get if you are just starting to listen to Prince, since it only has the hits on it. Although this is by no means a summary of his career (nothing from "For You", "Dirty Mind", or "Controversy", and nothing after "Diamonds And Pearls"; missing "7" and "Batdance", his final two #1s, and "Pop Life", "Delirious", "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" and "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" (which isn't even available in the store), all top 10s; and many of the songs in their single edits due to time constraints), it's a good place to start. And besides, we finally have "Little Red Corvette" and "Purple Rain" on iTunes.

To the Princess guy

If you are not a fan, why even listen? Prince, happens to be one of the most prolific artist of the 21st century. You listen to his music because you can't help yourself. It's contagious. Instead of insulting a great artist, why not find out what the hype is all about? Don't knock it until you've tried it.

Teaser Album

I grew up in Minneapolis and pretty much stalked Prince to ensure I wouldn't miss him playing live. I fell in love with his music because he was crazy funk with an artistic flare that is like no other. If you are reinesing about your yester-years and want that song from high school that you remember, sure, buy this albumn and be done with it. If you are a true fan of music and you want to understand one of the most influential musical artists of the last 60 years... I'd suggest you buy the albumns 1999, Purple Rain and Parade Under the Cherry Moon for starters and listen to the albums as complete albumns. If you like what you hear, go deeper into Controversy, Dirty Mind, Around The World in a Day and Sign O' The Times. Then, go really deep into the Black Album, LoveSexy and the B-Sides from the original greatest hits albumn in 1993. Personally, I've always enjoyed listening to them in chronological order because the music is so amazingly heart felt that you begin to understand the man... as much as one could possibly think that they understand Prince, that is. Past that, I personally haven't appreciated his later albumns, but it's not to say that they aren't worth a listen.
