iTunes Review

There are certain figures — Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Miles Davis — without whose presence it's impossible to imagine what jazz would have ended up sounding like. The legendary vocalist Billie Holiday is another one of those creative giants. Holiday revolutionized the relationship of the singer to the song by closing the gap between the two. Though she was an extraordinary stylist, she managed to give the impression that you were catching an unmediated glimpse of her unique human essence. And her influence has spread beyond jazz: countless singers in a variety of genres have been inspired by her moving performances. This collection of 36 tracks, drawn from the 10-CD Columbia release, Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday, features key collaborators such as Lester Young, Teddy Wilson, and Buck Clayton, along with a number of other fine players. Holiday is riveting whether she’s enlivening an old warhorse like “What A Little Moonlight Can Do,” singing a classic she co-wrote, “God Bless the Child,” or sending shivers up your spine with her version of “Body and Soul.” Oddly, “Strange Fruit,” a song that she owns, is not included here. But what is deserves to be.

Great compilation

Billie is really is the "prime example of the struggling artist..." With the troubled life she led but with her amazing gift of voice. This is a great compilation of songs by one of the best ladies of jazz to date.

Lady of the Lake

I remember when this came out. I'd always loved Billie, but this album didn't leave my car CD player for weeks. There was no better way to drive the cold from my toes in the morning than "What a Little Moonlight Can Do." Nothing to make me ache for a glass of wine and a cigarette (even though I don't smoke anymore) like "God Bless the Child." Nothing to make me want to dance with the man of my dreams so much as "The Very Thought of You." Billie aches. How can you not ache with her? Even if it is an ache to experience the most wonderful parts of life. Or an ache to escape the worst parts of your life. You ache when you listen to Billie.

Biography

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '30s, '40s, '50s

The first popular jazz singer to move audiences with the intense, personal feeling of classic blues, Billie Holiday changed the art of American pop vocals forever. More than a half-century after her death, it's difficult to believe that prior to her emergence, jazz and pop singers were tied to the Tin Pan Alley tradition and rarely personalized their songs; only blues singers like Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey actually gave the impression they had lived through what they were singing. Billie Holiday's...
