Album Review

An appealing concept album about crushes and puppy love, Totally Crushed Out! is full of tight punk-pop and pretty ballads. Tracks like "Ms. Wrong," "Silently," and "One Summer Night" capture the giddiness of first love with their three-part harmonies and sweet melodies. Totally Crushed Out! is cute and clever without being too cutesy or precious, and almost as memorable as a first crush.

This is not jazz! This is alternative rock!

I was surprised to see this CD existed, having That Dog's self-titled CD from years ago. I got it at Target for about $7 and it's a great CD though I never heard of them again. I searched for them, and am surprised to see they have another CD available, but they're under JAZZ?!! If you click on a couple of the songs below and listen, you will quickly see that That Dog is still the same cool band they were before and have not gone jazz. Someone at iTunes need to update their search database so that this album gets correctly categorized and is seen by more of its genre's fanbase where it belongs.

Happy to find That Dog again!

I heard That Dog perform live when I was 14 years old. I bought a cd of theirs and somehow ended up also with a cassette tape. I was so happy to find this cd on i-tunes as I no longer have a tape player. The song "Anymore," has helped me through hard times. It's soothing rhythm and sweet nostalgic harmonies fill my soul when I listen to the song. I think these girls can rock out all the while singing three-part harmonies and playing violin. It is worth a listen. Maybe it will move you as well!

One of the best power pop albums of the last decade

I saw That Dog! open up for Weezer way back in 1996, along with Teenage Fanclub. I had no idea who they were, but their set was amazing enough for me to buy the album. Since then, this album, as well as the self-titled, have been in circulation through my cd collection. The combination between Anna's pop sensibility and Petra's experimentalism make a near perfect power pop album, intelligent enough to be engaging, but still fun and catchy. Well worth the look. Oh, and it's not jazz.

The lineup of the Los Angeles-based indie pop quartet that dog. represented the flowering of a second generation of musical luminaries: singer/guitarist Anna Waronker was the daughter of famed producer and Warner Bros. head Lenny Waronker, while bassist Rachel Haden and her violinist sister, Petra, were two of the triplet daughters born to jazz titan Charlie Haden. Friends since high school, the trio first began playing music together in Waronker's bedroom in the early '90s. Joined by drummer Tony...
