Editors’ Notes

After finding fame as the star of the hit Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place and making three pop-rock albums as the frontwoman of Selena Gomez & the Scene, Gomez is out to develop a more mature persona with Stars Dance, a dance party firmly rooted in EDM and house influences. Sassy opening track “Birthday” bounds out of the gate with funky worldbeat blasts reminiscent of Santigold. The dancehall-tinged “Like a Champion” evokes Rihanna, right down to its “rum-pa-pa-pum” chorus and references to “shining like diamonds in the sky." Even in its breakup songs (the soaring “Forget Forever” and the wistful “Love Will Remember”), an irresistible beat is always just around the corner. But Gomez is primarily here to party, from the throbbing bass of “B.E.A.T." to the taunting na-na-na’s of the Eastern-flavored “Come & Get It."

ANOTHER FUN POP ALBUM FROM SELENA

Even though "Stars Dance" is most likely gonna be yet another collection of similarly themed dance-pop songs, I'm still pretty excited for its release. Selena Gomez may not quite be the most naturally talented pop star in the industry, but she has an undeniable charisma that easily makes her one of the most memorable current artists. Her music is fun and carefree, despite its lack of originality, and that's all I really expect from a singer like her, which is far from a bad thing. "Come & Get It" has already proven to be an instantly catchy first single with a creative Indian vibe, while "Slow Down" is another upbeat dance track with mindless but enjoyable lyrics. In the end, I think it's safe to say an album like this won't be winning any Grammys in the near future, but with songs as irresistibly fun as these, they're still well worth a listen, especially if you've always been a diehard fan of Selena and her teen-friendly brand of pop music. Personally, I just hope she reconnects with The Scene on her next record.

Made my ears hurt

After reading all of the "5 star" reviews on here, I'm a bit intimidated, but I have to say that the first song on this album, "Birthday" is terrible. First, its repetitive -- there are no real honest lyrics being sung, Second, her voice has been so electronically altered that she sounds like she's singing in a tin can. And whatever that inappropriate moaning is in the background actually makes the song worse. Selena is a very pretty and innocent-looking girl. The song would be tolerable, but whoever did the editing and put the moaning track in, should be slapped. You made a "Birthday" song sound dirty....and the non-existant lyrics don't even support the possibility that moaning might be occuring. If I can't get past the first song on the album, there is no way I can listen to the rest. Will not be buying this album. Save your money for something better.

Sounds good so far

I think this will be one of her best albums yet.
