Album Review

Like Nico, Astrud Gilberto's everywoman voiced has always had a polarizing effect on critics and fans alike. While her take on bossa nova is less than reverent and decidedly lightweight, the warmth and approachability she brings to each performance is stunning. Verve's lovingly compiled — and blissfully affordable — Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour is as solid a collection of her heady mixture of samba, jazz and pop as you're likely to find. Twenty songs, including the classic "Girl From Ipanema," wash in like waves from the warmest of oceans, carrying with them the soft, reverb-drenched soundtrack to summer. If the tropical heat of "Berimbau," the lazy and lonely pulse of Burt Bacharach's "Trains and Boats and Planes" and the upbeat swing of "Wish Me a Rainbow" don't instantly take the drudgery of your day away, then consider yourself hopelessly bitter. Highly recommended.

Oh so GOOD

Astrud Gilberto: This is one of the finest playlist I have on my Ipod. Her music is wonderful for sitting alone and listing or as background music for conversation. Her voice is always refreshing. Trains and Boats and Planes, a beautiful song.

A terrific introduction to both Ms. Gilberto and the music

This is a terrific introduction not only to the wonderful singing of Astrud Gilberto but also to many of the standards on the compilation. Her versions of these songs have quickly become my favorites and a staple of my ipod rotation. Trains and Boats and Planes almost always brings tears to my eyes.

A must-own album

For the mere $7.99 you'd be a fool to pass up this wonderful and historic collection.

The honey-toned chanteuse on the surprise Brazilian crossover hit "The Girl From Ipanema," Astrud Gilberto parlayed her previously unscheduled appearance (and professional singing debut) on the song into a lengthy career that resulted in nearly a dozen albums for Verve and a successful performing career that lasted into the '90s. Though her appearance at the studio to record "The Girl From Ipanema" was due only to her husband João, one of the most famed Brazilian artists of the century,...
