iTunes Editors’ Notes

Though The Dictators were one of the best bands of the '70s, they were known only to those who were up on their rock 'n' roll history. The 2001 set D.F.F.D. ("Dictators Forever, Forever Dictators") was The Dictators' first studio album in 23 years, since 1978's excellent Bloodbrothers. And it's quite possibly their best album. The years apart only let them hone their skills even further, with Handsome Dick Manitoba becoming a formidable singer; he was always a formidable presence. "Who Will Save Rock and Roll?" is the band's declaration of war, with songs like the Ramones-like "Pussy and Money" and the seething "Avenue A" channeling rage with a ferocity that only true New Yorkers—who now battle gentrification the way they used to battle poverty—can muster. Ross "The Boss" Friedman is a transcendent guitarist, and Andy Shernoff is a songwriter who knows how to balance the hilarious with the poignant, the trivial with the essential and come out with songs that sound like they've been around since the dawn of time.

Buy This

This is straight forward, two guitar blasting, rock and roll. After 20 years apart no band should sound this heavy and tight, but that is exactly what they sound like. HDM and Ross the Boss are in fine form here; don't cherry pick...buy the whole album and enjoy a reunion worth the wait for once.

It's got splunk.

These guys are mighty tight after 20 years! Their attitude is undiminished, just better articulated. Buy it.

buy the import verison if you can find it

its got a cover of Sonic Reducer on it. with that said, this is a great album from one of my favorite bands. Great New York Punk rock and roll.

Formed in 1974, N.Y.C.'s Dictators were one of the finest and most influential proto-punk bands to walk the earth. Alternately reveling in and satirizing the wanton excesses of a rock & roll lifestyle and lowbrow culture (e.g., wrestling, TV, fast food), with their world-view defined by bassist/keyboardist and former fanzine publisher (Teenage Wasteland Gazette) Andy (occasionally Adny) Shernoff and renegade rock critic/theorist Richard Meltzer, the Dictators played loud, fast rock & roll...
