Tasmania is quick becoming a well-known destination in Hollywood, with iconic scenery and charm of our towns captivating some of the world’s best known producers. The historic town of Stanley in Tasmania’s north west hosted some of the biggest names in Hollywood during the shoot of The Light Between Oceans, one of the latest films to feature our favourite island.
The streets of Stanley were transformed into the romantic period backdrop during filming, standing in for the fictitious coastal town of Partageuse for the movie which is based on the best-selling novel The Light Between Oceans by Australian author M.L Stedman.
Filmed in late 2014, the town of Stanley played host to the Hollywood production for just over week, with its vintage-looking main street, unique hillside views and wharf area, it was a perfect location for much of the exteriors needed for the film. Tasmanian actors were also given the opportunity to work as extras alongside Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender, and Rachel Weisz so keep an eye out for some familiar faces.
Stanley is a popular holiday and tourist destination with plenty of cultural destinations on offer. The Cow N Calf Art Gallery is a must see spot in Stanley, showcasing landscape and wilderness photography by David Murphey. Make sure you also plan a visit to the studio of Toby Muir Wilson, one of Tasmania’s finest master craftsmen and designer working in wood. The studio is open to visitors by appointment.
