This is an "updated" stage adaptation of the 1959 Richard Condon novel. It was first staged in 1991. It is not an adaptation of the 1962 John Frankenheimer film. It MAY be a source for the 2004 Jonathan Demme film remake, though I'll admit that's sheer speculation on my part.

I can go on at quite some length about the films...you can readily guess the one I admire and the one I do not...but as for the play itself, well, it gets the job done dramatically though in places it's either prescient or painfully outdated...already. Credit to John Lahr for trying to make a theatrical experience out of a novel that at times struggles to get to the point that the reader already knows. (UPDATE: Seek, find and read Francis Pollini's novel Night.)

"The Manchurian Candidate" is about brainwashing. The setting-during and after the Korean War. A young soldier, Raymond Shaw is brainwashed by a Dr. Yen Lo. Dr. Lo uses small haiku lines to initiate a deep hypnotic response in the soldiers picked to become assasins. When the haikus are spoken, these simple, eloquent words become instructions for the "patient" to follow. Through Dr. Yen Lo's work , Shaw becomes a deadly weapon used by the Chinese, Soviets, and the North Koreans. You can't help becoming a little paranoid reading this book. If you've ever been hypnotized, you'll be pondering the idea that just maybe someone could have implanted instuctions in you! I think this is a must read for anybody interested in war crimes, espionage, or just lusts for a terrific war thriller. This book would make Tom Clancy proud.

This is not the Manchurian Candidate by Richard Condon. This is a script for a remade play of the novel. Many people are being fooled thinking this is the original. It is truly unfortunate that the original is not plainly published anymore and that the only copies available on Amazon are from other readers. It is a shame that this is being sold by Amazon and not the original heavy hitting thriller
