Amazon.com Review
Like many African American writers, Chester Himes (1909-84) found personal and artistic freedom in Europe; his biographers, appropriately, are a French-American duo. They chronicle with perception a stormy life: a respectable, middle-class Southern childhood; rebellion culminating in armed robbery and an eight-year jail term; a writing career during which he won greater acclaim for the mysteries he cranked out for money (most notably Cotton Comes to Harlem) than for more "serious" novels. Edward Margolies and Michel Fabre, who knew Himes, sensitively delineate his complex psyche.
From Library Journal
Margolies (emeritus, Coll. of Staten Island) and Fabre (emeritus, Universite de la Sorbonne) are probably best known for their work on Richard Wright. It took them almost 15 years to complete this slim biography of Wright's fellow expatriate writer, Himes (author of such popular novels as A Rage in Harlem and Cotton Comes to Harlem). It is easy to see why this project took so long. The authors have done an exhaustive search of archival sources and conducted numerous interviews with Himes's friends and family, resulting in a disturbing portrait of a creative, highly complex man. The authors chronicle his troubled relationship with his parents, his brushes with the law, his life in Europe, his struggles to be considered a "serious" writer, his conflicting views on race relations, and a numbing litany of his affairs (mostly interracial). This is a fascinating, highly readable book best taken in small pieces. Recommended for academic collections.?Louis J. Parascandola, Long Island Univ., Brooklyn Campus

Book Description
A critical biography that reveals the varied profiles of the expatriate author
From the Inside Flap
A critical biography that reveals the varied profiles of the expatriate author
From the Back Cover
The Writings of Chester Himes are colored by a fascinating blend of hatred and tenderness, of hard-boiled realism and generous idealism. His life was complex, his relationships complicated. How did this gifted son of a respectable southern black family become a juvenile delinquent? How did he acquire self-esteem and a new sense of identity by writing short stories while in the Ohio state penitentiary? Drawn from his letters, notebooks, memoirs, and fiction, this straightforward account of Himes's varied, episodic life attempts to trace the origins of his significant literary gift. It details the socioeconomic, familial, and cultural background that fed his ambivalent views on race in America. His Deep South childhood, his adolescence in the Midwest, his young manhood in prison, his years as a menial laborer, his struggle as an author in California and New York City, and finally his glory days as an expatriate and celebrity in France and Spain are plumbed deeply for their effects upon his creative urges and his works. In his native country Himes is recalled more as the author of successful detective novels such as Cotton Comes to Harlem than as a practitioner of the art of fiction. In France and Spain, his adopted countries, he is regarded as a literary master. This critical biography is the bittersweet story of a troubled man who found salvation in writing.

This book left me feeling something crucial in the material was missing. I then read Lawrence P. Jackson's biography, "Chester B. Himes". By comparison, "... Several Lives..." is a quick study of this very complex man. Jackson's biography is a better written, more comprehensive examination of Himes, the people around him and the times and circumstances that most influenced him and his writing. I am not sorry I made this purchase, but Jackson's biography is a better option. Consider purchasing both if you want to understand who Himes was, and the importance of his work as a black man who wrote and published during very turbulent times in our country's history.

Edward Margolies and Michel Fabre-authors of this bio--both college professors.
Chester Himes 7/29/1909---11/12/1984...20 novels and 2 auto bios (when he was
writing his bios-he was starting to loose his memory-so a book like this is better
to read.)
Himes's books are all about being BLACK in AMERICA. There is no getting away from the
race question. The authors say-The writings of Himes are colored by a blend of hatred
and tenderness.
He is best known for his black NYC-HARLEM-police detectives-GRAVE DIGGER JONES & COFFIN
ED books. (I retired as a civie from a police dept/34yrs --I love detective stories.)
There is genius in his books. HE IS A GENIUS!-Had a southern childhood,Midwest teens and
adulthood in prison. As an adult he lived in Calif and NYC. Moved to France and later to
Spain.
He had many many difficult relationships with women. He had one black wife/Jean and
one white wife/Leslie. Many white lovers in between. He saw sex and love as a race
war.
He was always torn by the fact that his mom was very light skinned and his father very
black. She liked many things in the white world.
He was abusive,manipulative,jealous,frustra-ed angry, shrill, wild and uncomprimising most
of the time.
He still had a circle of famous friends in Paris....writers--Richard Wright,James Baldwin,
cartoonist Ollie Harrington, Bill Coleman-jazz trumpeter and X USA GI-Leroy Haynes who had
a soul food cafe.
He had cats for pets and he loved dogs. He was a carpenter and could remodel a house. He could
work on a car. He could do almost anything.
He was always broke. Money was a problem.--Always borrowing money. Sometimes he paid it
back.
He was a great practitoner of fiction. Un-sparing witness to the changing times. His
notion of telling it like it is paid off.
Chapters on-genealogy,the south,adolescence,..Ohio State prison,freedom,arrivals and depar-
tures,interim,celebrity,3 women,Leslie,Spain..and what did I do?

This succinct, well written and exhaustively researched biography is the definitive work on Himes. Margolies and Fabre both knew Himes well and interviewed friends, family and just about everyone else who had significant interactions with this great and underappreciated writer. And what a life Himes led! It included eight years in the Ohio penitentiary on an armed robbery charge, time as a Hollywood screenwriter, and many years as an expat African-American writer in Paris (Richard Wright and James Baldwin were also living in Paris during this time).
Himes detective novels stand alongside those of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett as the best of the 20th century. If you are interested in Himes work and life, this biography is essential reading.
