John Mateer has published books in South Africa, Portugal, Austria, the UK and Australia, and smaller publications in Sumatra, Kyoto and Macau. He has read his work at festivals in Europe and Asia, as well as at the Chicago Humanities Festival and PEN's Free the Word in London. His latest books are The West: Australian Poems 1989-2009, Emptiness: Asian Poems 1998-2012, Southern Barbarians and Unbelievers, or 'The Moor'. The German translations of his works are: Einmal weiß (trans. Ludwig Roman Fleischer), Der Narbenbaum (trans. Andreas Schachermayr) and Ungläubige (Daniel Terkl). João, a volume of sonnets describing twelve years of travel, is forthcoming.
