Google+, the search giant’s new social network, has rolled out trending topics within Google+ Search.

Mashable has been informed that trending topics quietly rolled out Thursday night. Like Twitter’s Trending Topics, the Google+ version lists 10 of the hottest and most popular discussion items on the social network. Clicking on a trending topic will launch a search query.

Google has also rolled out some additional improvements to Google+ Search. Google+ users can now search within just their own posts, their circles or the entire Google+ network. The search giant has also changed the layout of the search page with several UI tweaks. The company originally launched Google+ Search in September.

Trending topics helped make Twitter a more relevant metric of what the world was talking about at any given moment. Google has worked for years in the space, most notably with Google Trends and Hot Searches, but Google+ offers the search giant the ability to see what is truly trending in real time.

Perhaps it’s Twitter, and not Facebook, that should be worried about Google+. We’ve reached out to Google for comment.

Update: Google has confirmed with Mashable that trending topics rolled out last night. Google+ Searches also now default to “most recent” rather than “best of”.

  3. Have not seen this on my Google Plus profile yet, both business and personal

  4. Google+ has not rolled out that much… Twitter and Facebook will also keep innovating and will still be industry leaders. First movers get the rewards… For once, Google came in too late !

    • Well what about friendster and myspace. They came in way before Facebook and Twitter and look where they’re now! I think they’re is something else to say other than just being the first leaders in the industry.

    • Agree with Keith. Google is obviously getting users onto its network and Facebook does not have nearly the infastructure, hardware or software, in place to compete with Google. Android is going to push users onto Google+ and creation of new Google accounts. Facebook has to rely on the user to look for them, while Google can target users that almost certainly use at least 1 of their products, and probably multiple.

Its not all about being first, sometimes its all about how good your marketing and penetration are, and Google is good at both.

  5. Cool! Now if only people would actually start using Google+…

  9. This just shows how stupid the Google CEO is. He believes that rolling trending topics out is helpful to him. That is so dumb. This buffoon thinks he is better than everyone. If Google Plus continue what it is doing it will end even worser than Myspace. So fuck Eric Schimdt too.

  10. Nice improvement. Especially the search’s “Most recent”.

  11. Stupid, unnecessary and copied. I think trending topics look good on Twitter and that’s where they should stay. Anyways, I don’t really care about this since I delete by Google+ account since it was useless and boring.

  12. “Clicking on a trending topic will launch a search” That’s very interesting! #G+ #SocialMedia #SEO

  13. Indeed. Just like was Facebook in the past. A few years ago, here in Brasil, all we knew about social network used to be Orkut. But when people discovered Facebook, after being translated to portuguese, the main subject in there was FB itself. Google+ does might be filtering that stuff.
