    Presidential Vacation Homes

Whether it’s “the Summer White House,” “the Winter White House,” a beach house or a fishing camp, presidents need to get away, too.

If a current or former president stays at a friend’s estate even for only one night, the visit bestows bragging rights to the place, and plaques can be ordered stating a president slept here.

Some houses have more than one well-traveled president’s name in their pedigree. A few of the following homes also have hosted other dignitaries, movie stars, and at least one of the mansions has appeared in several movies. Apparently, the presidential association is good for real estate prices, too. The prices of the following homes (with most images provided by Realtor.com) range from $1.675 million to $95 million.

    President Barack Obama

    Location:
    Kailua Bay, Oahu, HI
    Price: $9.8 million
    Bedrooms: 5
    Bathrooms: 7
    Square Footage: 5,145

This Hawaiian retreat was the “winter White House” most recently in December 2011. (From 2008 until 2010, the Obamas rented a nearby home each December. ) The house, which is currently on the market for nearly $10 million , is Asian-inspired with bamboo ceilings. In front there’s a lagoon-like pool and Jacuzzi, and out back is the ocean.

In summers, Blue Heron Farm on Martha’s Vineyard has served as the Obama “Summer White House.”

    Mitt Romney
    Location:
    La Jolla, CA
    Price: $12 million
    Bedrooms: 3
    Bathrooms: 4
    Square Footage: 3,009

A reporter recently asked Ann Romney if she and her husband would vacation abroad as much as 'the Obamas' if Mitt is elected president. “I doubt that,” she replied , “Our vacations and our happiness come from being with our children and grandchildren.” It was an odd question on the reporter’s part considering that while Michelle Obama and the girls took a controversial trip to Spain, President Obama has not vacationed abroad since taking office.

Ann Romney added that as for vacation spots, her family has its “own places for that.” Indeed:  Here is just one, a Spanish-style beachfront home in La Jolla.  But the house will not remain this way for long, according to renovation plans reported earlier this year that would drastically increase the size of the house. Those plans call for a four-car garage with car elevator, a water feature and outdoor shower, and a new 3,600 square-foot basement. If the plans are carried out, the house will more than triple into a mansion size of about 11,000 square feet.

    Hillsborough, CA
    Price: $29 million
    Bedrooms: 12
    Bathrooms: 15
    Square Footage: 35,000

The enormous Tudor mansion built for bank heiress Cilia Tobin Clark has hosted presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, as well as prominent figures such as the late King Hussein of Jordan and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

The 6-acre Tobin Clark Estate overlooking San Francisco’s Lower Bay was built in 1931 and has been fully restored and updated to the tune of more than $19 million. The house, which is for sale and was once known as House-on-Hill, has a grand ballroom, a music room, banquet facility, wine vault storing more than 1,700 bottles, media room and gym.

    Richard Nixon
    Location:
    San Clemente, CA
    Price: $1.925 million
    Bedrooms: 3
    Bathrooms: 3
    Square Footage: 2,500

Built in 1926, this house by the beach has hosted President Richard Nixon, as well as another president (of the NRA) Charlton Heston. Gloria Swanson, Joseph Kennedy, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe and Doris Day have also spent time in this home.  Notable features at Nixon’s “Western White House”, which is for sale , include cathedral exposed beam ceilings, Dutch doors, an outdoor shower, two fireplaces, two balconies and French doors that open out to a side patio.

    John F. Kennedy
    Location:
    Beverly Hills, CA
    Price: $95 million
    Bedrooms: N/A
    Bathrooms: N/A
    Square Footage: N/A

The terra cotta and stucco Beverly Hills House hosted John and Jacqueline Kennedy on their honeymoon, and was used for location shots seen in “The Godfather” and “The Bodyguard.” Just three blocks from Sunset Boulevard, the estate, which is for sale , features 50-foot ceilings in the entry hall, an Art Deco nightclub, an outdoor terrace that can accommodate 400 for sit-down dining, and two projection rooms. Also on the 3.7 acre property are a tennis court with an indoor bar, an eight-car garage with a guest house above, staff housing and security cottage.

I wouldn't know whattoo do with a 5145 square foot house. I would need to have 20 kids.
      • CHRISTOPHER L 46 minutes ago
Imagine trying to clean it, but then again that's where the 20 kids come in.

And to think we have homeless people here in the USA
    • KennethJ  •  2 hours 38 minutes ago
Reagan had the biggest one with 35,000 square feet 12 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms and Nixon who had the smallest with only 2,500 square feet 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
A person could get lost in Reagans vacation home and could make a quick exit in Nixon vacation home.

What about Camp David? You know the presidential retreat that is already funded by the taxpayers and sits empty.

Read the history of Camp David. I just did.

Romney can pay his own way so vote in Nov. and check the box next to Mitt.
      • Mike 10 hours ago
Yeah Fredw he inherited his money from his daddy and got richer at the expense of workers and also alot of shareholders. He's sounds really in touch with the average American. I'm completely confident he can run this country into the ground as well as Bush, all the while enriching his cronies.

They should have included 'Sunnylands' the Annenberg estate in Rancho Mirage, CA used to entertain presidents, royalty and heads of state...
    • Stoney McStonerson  •  11 hours ago
so Nixon was the only one with a reasonable vacation home hmmm
      • Naomi 10 hours ago
Your idea of a "reasonable" vacation home is very skewed, unless of course you're a mulch-millionare.
      • Naomi 10 hours ago
*that's supposed to be multi-millionaire - darn auto spell.

What about Key West and Camp David? Both of these make sense as vacation retreats for President, especially over rental properties. Truman's retreat in Key West is right off a military base (use to be part of base housing), economically and logistically Key West seems to make a lot of sense (something that President's should be required to take into account). If I were President I would be there a lot, but hey I stay about a block away a couple of times a year.

Yahoo when you come up and show us the picture where the greed people go in vacation you should get them interview and ask them about how they feel about invalid people who are in hospital suffering different injury from fighting for this country.
We are not equal "but" we can do much better for the one who gives us life which are now older and not able to do to much and needs our attention about giving them better care and service.
What about our kids who can not fight for their rights and we ignore them and live them in dangerous world without giving them a place where to stay.
We talking about food stamps and welfare for homeless people they need a chance too not only 1% of rich people.
Its really shame when you see things like that knowing you don`t live forever ;)

Fit for a President? The job isn't suppose to enrich those GOONS financially only morally and intellectually! Another article and proof that America is totally in the Toilet and is without doubt a Banana Republic as of the 28th of June 2012. Suddenly Chaves DOESN'T smell sulfur anymore, he smells Comrades!
