Too many drunks and lawsuits are ruining Christmas

The office Christmas party is dying out because of fears that workers could sue over other employees’ drunken antics and a prevailing “Scrooge” mentality. A third of companies will not hold a staff party this year, according to a survey. This is twice as many as in 2002. Of those that do hold a seasonal get-together, four in 10 do [...]

How to verify an email address (before you send an email)

Stumbled across a cool tool today called “Verify Email Address.” Okay, so the name of the product isn’t sexy; it does not matter to me just so long that it works. This is how to use it: step-by-step. 1. Go to Verify-Email.org and type in an email address. 2. Verify-Email goes to the mail server, checks to see if the [...]

COOL TOOL ALERT – ZipSkinny.com

Hat tip to Howard Adamsky for sharing with me a cool tool – ZipSkinny. Zipskinny was created as a Web development “hobby” project using Census 2000 data obtained from the Census website. By their own ommission, the information is not 100% accurate and users are encouraged to bounce the data found on this site with those found on the Census [...]

BEAUTY is in the eye of the employer

BEAUTY is in the eye of the employer when it comes to finding staff for Scotland’s fashion sector. An ugly row has erupted over the increasingly common practice among clothes retailers, style bars and other fashion-conscious employers of demanding that job candidates include a photo with their CV. One major fashion chain has already abandoned the controversial recruitment policy after [...]

Chevron pays $5.5 million dollars for wrongful termination

Ouch! (I wonder if this will affect the price of Unleaded next week?) Check it out… A former Chevron Corp. employee was awarded $5.5 million by a San Francisco federal court jury that found Chevron liable for retaliation and wrongful termination. Kiran Pande, who holds a Ph.D. in petroleum engineering from Stanford University, was fired by Chevron in late 2003 [...]

MI6 says, “James Bond is bad for recruiting?”

The success of the James Bond movies has given the British Secret Intelligence Service a recruitment headache — too many cranks want to join MI6. “I think it gives people a false impression of what working for the organization is actually like,” the head of MI6 recruitment — named only as “Mark” — told BBC Radio One’s Newsbeat program on [...]

CHINA – I need you to resign and then reapply to the job I just fired you from

It was reported that some 7,000 employees of Huawei Technologies Co were required to resign from and then re-apply for their jobs. This has stirred some controversy in recent weeks. That the move came just two months before the amended Labor Law takes effect in January raises suspicion that the goal was to evade the extra economic burden the company [...]

AUSTRALIA – Workplace naps increase office productivity?

More companies need to introduce workplace napping and caffeine therapy to help sleepy workers overcome their chronic tiredness, a sleep expert warns. A medical meeting in Melbourne will be told on Saturday that an increasing number of employees are working on less sleep. Despite this, Australia has been slow to embrace strategies that directly deal with fatigue caused by shiftwork [...]

And now, a new way to say “I gave at the office.”

The message is popping up everywhere. Signs have appeared inside Metro trains; banners are plastered on city buildings. The warning has even invaded the airwaves. The targets of the campaign are the thousands of federal workers who make annual charitable donations through their workplaces. Volunteers are trying to prevent confusion from a small but critical change in the way preferred [...]

Monster.com was hacked (again)

I commented on this the last time it happenned. So please refer to my earlier rant. For now, check out this rant from another blogger… This again already? Just a few months ago, we heard about Monster.com being the target of a trojan and the subsequent loss of user data that took place. Monster.com said shortly thereafter that they would [...]

Would you re-hire Don Imus?

CBS Radio suspended, then fired, host Don Imus in April 2007, eight days after he made racial and sexual slurs toward the Rutgers University women’s basketball team on his programme. In the public furor and public relations mess that ensued, there was no second chance or do-over for Imus at CBS, despite his public apologies. Instead, he went elsewhere. About [...]
