Marcus Sjöström on Employee’s Hold Music Vol. 1:
“I don’t know much about this release, the label or the artist, but it’s one of my favorite purchases of 2020.
Beatbude is a Berlin based label, and Employee is a moniker for artist/producer Max Graef. The album was released in late September, but I saw a post about it on Reddit around three weeks later and bought it after a quick listen.
It’s mostly relaxing jazzy muzak, just as the name implies. Well made, but I’ve got a bunch of other stuff that sound similar. It’s appeal lies instead in a lot of the details around it. The simple but original design that for me perfectly encapsulates the DIY aesthetics of the mid 90s when PCs suddenly became a natural part of people’s homes. I love how it looks and sounds kinda naive and friendly, but still manages to feel punk af. And, at least to me, it feels very Berlin. The fact that they had a telephone number you could call to listen to snippets made it even better. And the first track is just two minutes of a call tone. Kinda annoying, but also kinda brilliant to be honest.
I could go on, but it wouldn’t add much. It was just a really fun release and I’m glad I saw that post and managed to pick it up. Well done Beatbude. Looking forward to future releases!”
