How Global Can We Go?

Gravatar has always been about GLOBALLY Recognized Avatars. The Global part of that came from Gravatar being really simple to implement in almost any environment. Let’s see what we can do to make things global by being available in every language!
Previously, a few very helpful volunteers made sure that the Gravatar website was available in 14 different languages. There are now more strings to translate than ever (469 per language actually!), and so we’ve spent some time trying to make things easier to work with. Our buddies over at WordPress.com are hosting a GlotPress installation for us that will allow you all to contribute to the translation process online, with nothing but a web browser. All you need to do to get started is head over to the Gravatar project, log in using your WordPress.com/Gravatar account and start translating strings!
We’ve imported all previous translations to get things started, and you’ll find some nifty tools in GlotPress, including the ability to use Google Translate for a bit of a head start. Strings are also prioritized according to where they appear within the website (so that we get the most important ones translated first). If you’d like to work on a language that isn’t currently listed, please let us know via an email to support [at] gravatar.com and we’ll get things set up for you.
Once each translation gets near completion, we’ll get it online so that everyone can benefit from seeing the Gravatar.com website in their native language.
We’re really looking forward to making Gravatar even more global than ever with your help!

This is going to sound awfully cynical of me, but would it hurt to point out that Gravatar is not exactly an open standard or grassroots volunteer effort? The entire thing’s controlled by Automattic, and we have no assurances that it won’t become the next Facebook (in terms of behavior that’s not in users’ best interests), especially as it starts trying to become a profile.
I like helping people, but I’d feel uneasy about helping with that.
It’s not cynical Jared, it’s a fact. Gravatar is a website, owned and operated by a commercial entity. All I can really say is that we’re doing our best to create something that’s useful for everyone, and we’re actually looking at ways to make Gravatar open source (while still being useful, as the whole point of it as a service kind of relies on it being centralized). Part of this quest is making sure that all data stored in Gravatar is as open as possible, as you’ll see in the near future 🙂

I do not understand your reasoning, Internet protocol and need free software but can not leave to rate those as gravatar provides valuable service. The pay is but it coexists with the Free and vice versa, I think both are needed each other to exist.Excuse my English I am going through a translator. cordially
It’s great that we can finally update translations! Please update page http://gravatar.com/site/translate/ since it gives obsolete information and put a link to it from somewhere (probably developers resources).
Thanks Milan! I’ll be changing that page in the next day or 2 to just redirect over to the GlotPress project to avoid confusion (all of those translations have been merged into the GP project already).
What would make Gravatar more useful is adoption on other platforms (Twitter, for example) vs. translations. Until Gravatars can be used in other places with more frequency, it only solves part of the problem it set out to fix.

If you mean you’d like to be a “validator” for translations, then please email support (at) gravatar.com with your WordPress.com/Gravatar username and request access for Arabic.

We haven’t made that URL available just yet — we need to get automated deployment set up for the translations first. Thank you for your help in translating, now we need to get our act together and get that out!

We’re still getting together a deployment system so that we can roll out some of the translated versions of Gravatar that a group of awesome volunteers have been working on.
You are taking it way too long. It is more than 3 months since you announced this and although translators finished their job we still can’t see results of it so it’s almost worthless.
Can you say when you are ready for this?

I’ve just uploaded a number of translation updates, but I noticed that Spanish has not been “validated” by anyone yet. The domain will work, but it’s all still in in English right now. I’ll be posting to the blog to see if we can get someone who can help with that.

I’m glad you listened to my advice, even though comment wasn’t approved.
But before you make any announcement, you need to do something we talked about months ago via email: to update strings in GlotPress. Now that you deployed translations, you can see how much strings left untranslated, even though everything on GlotPress is translated.
So, please, make new POT file, and upload it on GlotPress and then make announcements. Also, please review your code, especially regarding emails since they are mostly not i18n, as I already told you before.

Awww c’mon it’s already more than half a month.
Im making few sites with gravatar adition, and I cant just say for people to go and register here while here is only english and other popular languages.
I would wish to translate it to lithuanian. Im revisiting the http://lt.gravatar.com but it’s not there yet. My comments also awaiting moderation… hope it will go smoother afterwards… someday 🙂
