Glaser's Bakery[edit]
We need some pictures of Glaser's Bakery[1] before they close on Juli 1. Could you manage it? Thank you. --Fridolin freudenfett (talk) 10:12, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
- Not my usual neighborhood, but I'll try to get over there. Beyond My Ken (talk) 16:27, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
- I don't think I'm going to be able to get there before the 1st, but that might be better in any case. News reports right now show people lined up in front of the store, which would make it difficult to get a clean shot, whereas after it closes there are unlikely to be people around. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:34, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
- I hope you will be able to make any pictures. But nevertheless some pictures of their "Black an White cookies" would be fine, because they are considered to be the origin of what is called here in Germany "Amerikaner". [2][3] It must (have been) be a very famous bakery. Anyway thank you for your efforts. --Fridolin freudenfett (talk) 20:43, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
- Well, it's already the 2nd and I still haven't gotten over there, my apologies for that. Unfortunately the combination of that neighborhood being by far the most difficult place to get to from my own neighborhood, and an extreme heat wave here in NYC has kept me inside in front of the air conditioner. I don't know if Jim was able to get over there or not, but it's still on my list. I hope to make it when the heat breaks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:10, 2 July 2018 (UTC)

- This is how we handle the temperature here in Berlin. We even can reach the lake by bike. But I know it's nothing compared to NYC. --Fridolin freudenfett (talk) 22:06, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
- Here in NYC, the city has public "cooling centers" where people can go to cool off if they don't have air conditioning in their homes. The city has also extended the hours of the public swimming pools. And, of course, there are beaches, both in the city and out on Long Island, many of them fairly easily reachable by public transportation. Those with the means can also head for the Catskill and Pocono Mountain resort areas, or the Jersey Shore. Still, many people just stay at home and keep the air conditioning cranked. Category:Trees in the Northern Hemisphere in November versus Category:Fall foliage[edit]
Category:Trees in the Northern Hemisphere in November describes much better what is on the picutre than Category:Fall foliage as the whole trees are visible, November is part of the season Fall and therefore by definition all foliage visible on trees in November is fall foliage. --Kersti (talk) 14:38, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
- Frankly, I think that the category is pedantic and not at all useful to our users. Beyond My Ken (talk) 17:35, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
- Frankly I think, that your ideas of sorting pictures are fully ok for a picture collection at least a thousand times smaller than Wikimedia Commons but absolutely inadequate for a colltection as big as Commons, where such a category would be overcrowdet within days if all people would think like you. And for people who have more exact ideas about what they are searching than "fall foliage" such overcrowdet categories are a real problem! --Kersti (talk) 18:09, 23 July 2018 (UTC)
Not by Clarke?[edit]
Hey, BMK. I hope you're well.
I've been doing some work on Thomas Shields Clarke, and discovered that SIRIS credits these over-pedimental groups to Maxmillian Schwarzott, a sculptor I'd never heard of and can find almost nothing about.
Just wanted to give you a heads-up on why I changed them.
Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 18:48, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. What's strange is that I cannot find now what the source was for my attributing them to Clarke. It's not in the AIA Guide to NYC and it's not in the NYCLPC designation report or the Landmarks book. I had to have taken it from somewhere, because it's not in the least my field, and I wouldn't have made it up. I just can't figure out where I got it from. Thanks for the fix. Heads up, I corrected the description of a file you edited. (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Pvt_Harry_Shelley_receives_British_Distinguished_Conduct_Medal_from_King_George_V.jpg) - see history tab for explanation.
You might want to correct the filename as well. I'm not sure how to do this without breaking everything. —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2601:603:1980:C27:49EF:3720:A918:58CD (talk) 09:33, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

- What is your source for the 1907-08 information? Beyond My Ken (talk) 05:33, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
- First, there's no way Bernstein & Bernstein would have build a building in the 1930s. The company was done by 1910. The source is this book (Apartment houses of the metropolis), published in 1908 and uploaded on Commons. On page 248 of this book, published in 1908, the building is featured and it says that it was build in 1907-08. Thanks for your pictures by the way. Have a good night and I hope we can have a more peaceful relationship in the future. --Deansfa (talk) 05:39, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for the source, it looks good to me. The source I used is the NYC GIS map, which is sometimes accurate, but sometimes merely indicates the first record that exists in the DOB files, so a specific source such as yours is certainly better. I'm certainly willing to start over, as I think it's better for all if we collaborate instead of working against each other. Best, Beyond My Ken (talk) 05:46, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
- Ok, I just discovered how NYC GIS map and saw the record for 152 EAST 22 STREET. Be careful about the construction dates of prewar buildings on this website, because it relies on the PLUTO dataset which is not super accurate for build dates. The documentation about PLUTO dataset explains very clearly (page 30, paragraph "YEAR BUILT") that "Year Built is accurate for the decade but not necessarily for the specific year. Two outliers – 1910 & 1920. Structures built between 1800s and early 1900s usually have a Year Built date of either 1910 or 1920.". I would recommend to look at this dataset instead (LPC Individual Landmark and Historic District Building Data), the dates are super accurate. You can download it in CSV. Sorry for the length of the message. Thanks for your message and I'm looking forward to collaborate with each others. Best, --Deansfa (talk) 06:03, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge - Boston, MA crop.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. Out of Town News[edit]
Please stop adding Category:Out of Town News to File:Harvard Square circa 1950s postcard.jpg. That postcard only shows the subway headhouse; at the time, OOTN was elsewhere in the square. The OOTN structure was added in 1966; when you were there in the 1970s, it was located right next to the headhouse. (See 1970 photo, 1976 photo, ca. 1980 photo, and ca. 1970s postcard, all of which show the OOTN stand and the subway entrance adjacent in the square.) Not until 1984 - at which time the newer glass subway entrance had been built - did OOTN move into the former subway headhouse that it occupied until recently. - I've tried and have not been successful in doing so. If you tell me how, I'll be glad to do it, but in my opinion, the problem is on the Wikidata side, in that the infoboxes should adjust automatically to such moves. Beyond My Ken (talk) 17:56, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
Just had a similar issue on Category:The Bronze Age by Auguste Rodin. How are you doing the moves of content? Are you using Delinker, or something else? - Jmabel ! talk 02:37, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
- I use cat-a-lot to move all content to the new category, then edit the old category to redirect to the new one, and manually cut the text and categories (including the Wikidata infoxbox) from the old cat and paste them into the new one. I tried using Category Move back when it was first instituted, but something about that didn't work well (I can't recall what). Beyond My Ken (talk) 19:48, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
- That is guaranteed not to update Wikidata. Moving the template that says "pull information from Wikidata for this category" and moving the template to a new category that hasn't been linked from Wikidata will always fail. - Jmabel ! talk 00:02, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, I'm aware that it fails. Is there a procedure that doesn't? Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:24, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
- Before you redirect the old category, you can click through to the Wikidata item and change it to refer to the new category. Two places to change: the Commons wikilink at the bottom, and the "Commons Category" link (P273, man it's weird that I know that without looking it up). - Jmabel ! talk 04:48, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Doing an actual move on the category will also update Wikidata. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:34, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
- OK, I'll try that the next time I need to move a category with a Wikidata infobox. Thanks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:39, 8 May 2019 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:David Goodhart at UCL, November 2015 crop.jpg[edit]

This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:David Goodhart at UCL, November 2015 crop.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image".
If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Old_Town_San_Diego_State_Historic_Park&diff=373557075&oldid=373556641 : I suspect that things like what you removed are useful. Text like this can guide someone looking in what seems to be the right category (but isn't) to where they should actually be. Especially important if that "someone" is an uploader, and this helps get the right category on an image. What's the argument for removing? - Jmabel ! talk 00:56, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

- Aha! Thanks. (Nothing in the edit summary about fixing an inaccuracy.)
- What's the story on https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:San_Diego_-_Verna_House_02.jpg&diff=373701424&oldid=329631392 and https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:San_Diego_-_Verna_House_01.jpg&diff=373701393&oldid=329631382 ? Important message for file movers[edit]
A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. - You clearly do not correctly understand US law. US Court decisions have ruled that artworks which are part of the exterior architecture of buildings -- such as "Metronome" -- are covered by the Freedom of Panorama exception for architecture which came into being at the time that architecture was deemed copyrightable. Any building in the US seen from a public place can be freely photographed and the photographed published. This applies also to artistic works which are an intruinsic part of the exterior architecture of the building. Beyond My Ken (talk) 11:06, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
Sunken Meadow State Park; Art Deco or Streamline Moderne?[edit]
I've been classifying the main building and recently rebuilt tollbooth of the Sunken Meadow State Park as having Art Deco architecture, but from time to time I suspect that it might actually be Streamline Moderne instead. ----DanTD (talk) 16:27, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
- My opinion (and I'm no expert) is that it's not decorated enough to be Deco, so I'd go with Moderne. Beyond My Ken (talk) 18:06, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
Cropping and adding names to the author field[edit]
Hey there,
You may have already seen this thread: Commons:Village_pump/Copyright#Does_cropping_create_a_new_copyright?. I probably should've left this message first, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't mistaken. Ah well.
I came across this website recently, which used a photo I took of Cornell Tech, credited to "Rhododendrites/Beyond My Ken". I was confused, then saw that you had added your name to the "author" field after cropping it (likewise here and quite a lot of others). For the most part, these seem to be crops (and that's what's mentioned in the author field, of course). The Cornell Tech one is slightly different because it looks like you brightened it, too. I'd still probably argue that these changes aren't enough to constitute a new copyright, but you may want to weigh in on the VPC thread. — Rhododendrites talk | 15:38, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the pointer. As I said in my brief comment there, I had no intention of claiming a new copyright, merely of providing information as to who made the crop. You'll note that none of the images I've cropped appear in my personal collection Category:Images by Beyond My Ken. If there's a better place to put the info, please let me know, and if you want to move the info on any of your own images which I cropped, please feel free to do so. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:51, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

- It is exactly the same file, just cleaned up so that it can be seen. Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:52, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2020! Please help with this survey[edit]
Dear Romaine,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2020, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again for a few minutes of your time. Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 200K+ pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world.
You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet). To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey.
Please fill in this short survey and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2020.
Kind regards,
the Wiki Loves Monuments team, 07:04, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Samuel Colman - Hudson River from Irvington.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Providence station[edit]
Please stop moving these categories. "Interior of XYZ station" is the standard form, as seen in the various subcategories of Category:Interiors of train stations in the United States. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 01:46, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- And you please stop messing with them in the middle of my working on them. You want to change them afterwards, fine, but give me a chance to do my work first, as it just causes confusion. Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:50, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- BTW, the name of the building is "Providence Station":

We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. File:Providence Marine Corps of Artillery Arsenal.jpg[edit]
Per the rules clearly listed at COM:OW, overwriting files should not be used for controversial or contested changes. "Once a change has been reverted, the new image should be uploaded under a new filename (unless the reverting editor explicitly or implicitly agrees to the contested change). This is true even if the change is necessary, in one editor's view, to avoid a copyright infringement: in this case, if agreement cannot be reached through discussion, the old file should be nominated for deletion." As the original uploader, I request that you stop File:Providence Marine Corps of Artillery Arsenal.jpg. If you would like to make changes, please upload a new file. If you continue to overwrite the file, I will seek administrator intervention. Thank you. Filetime (talk) 19:30, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
