Editors’ Notes

Black Eyes Peas took a quantum leap forward with Elephunk, the album on which the group traded in its purist hip-hop style for an amalgamation of global pop sounds. Newly minted member Fergie provides the group with new energy, applying an R&B hook where needed, but equally able to play the bodacious frontwoman. “Let’s Get Retarded” is a textbook example of a song designed to hook a mass audience, and it’s no surprise that it found a second life when it was reworked as “Let’s Get It Started” and used as the theme song for the 2004 NBA playoffs, and the 2004 Democratic National Convention. In the same vein, “Where Is the Love?” is a perfect fusion of pop and hip-hop, the kind of song that once won a worldwide audience for Will Smith. Despite its corny sentiment, its overtly positive attitude struck a chord when it was released in June of 2003, just a few months after the start of the Iraq war. The Peas continue to specialize in uptempo, danceable hip-hop and club music (“Hey Mama,” “Shut Up,” “The Boogie That Be”) but it's “Sexy” and “Smells Like Funk” that show will.i.am developing a musical vision on par with Wyclef Jean and Kanye West.

Elephunk-A New Beginning

Elephunk is the first album I actually heard about because Fergie had joined the group. The album is rap and they do swear a couple times. Hands Up is a really good start for the album, talking about partying and letting loose. Labor Day is really food because it's fun and wild. Let's Get Retarted is a great song that actually does not make fun of the mentally challenged. Hey Mama is a club song that is great to dance to. Shut Up is really fun even though it's about a bad relationship. Fly Away is fun also. The Boogie That Be is one of the best songs. The Apl Song is about Apl's homeland. Where is the Love is a deep and meaningful song about the war and the cruelty people have. Let's Get It Started is a really great song to dance to. It's energetic and makes you want to lose control. Third Eye is a bonus track about not being able to be lied to or fooled. Over all, the album is AWESOM!!!

BEST

Okay i am definetly not a rap fan, but i love this group because of this CD. When i got it i listned to it just about 24/7 i loved it so much. ALL of its songs are great.

Better than Monkey Business

In my opinion, this is better because of I like all of the songs that come with it. It have the phunkiness we need and some meaningful songs. Of course, hip dance can't hurt. If you like the mood of this cd, it will energize you whole day long.

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The Black Eyed Peas transcended hip-hop to become one of the most commercially successful pop groups of the 2000s. Their career began modestly, with a pair of albums inspired by the positive-minded likes of A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. After adding Fergie, the group's pop instincts reached full flight. Ignited by the Top Ten hit "Where Is the Love?" and the Grammy-winning party anthem "Let's Get It Started," the group scored three multi-platinum albums in 2003's Elephunk, 2005's Monkey Business,...
