Editors’ Notes
Shorter on transcendence than his two previous releases – Astral Weeks, Moondance – His Band the Street Choir features 12 succinct folk and R&B flavored jabs, best exemplified by the album’s hit single “Domino.” Alongside Jack Schroer’s saxophones and Keith Johnson’s trumpet, Morrison pitts himself as a streetwise world-weary hustler trying to get back to the land. The album has the feel of hippie hangover marked in its early ‘70s grooves; the artistic schizophrenia is everywhere. Morrison vacillates between his contemporary young, hippie inclinations (“Virgo Clowns,” “If I Ever Needed Someone,” “Street Choir”) and the tough blues tradition of his adolescence (“I’ve Been Workin’,” “Blue Money,” “Call Me Up in Dreamland”), making for an album of brilliant moments but little actual flow. Tellingly, the album’s greatest success is its final track, “Street Choir,” where with his well-seasoned sidemen and accomplished backing vocalists, the Irish singer attempts to understand his confused relationship with America, the land that brought him the music that inspired him and which he now struggled to call home.
Customer Reviews
"Call Me Up In Van Land!"
"I Just Wanna Hear Some Rhythm & Blues On The Radio!"..And I still want to today! "His Band and the Street Choir" answers that time-honored question:"How do you top yourself?" AM & FM Radio play gave us Domino and Blue Money; two well-constructed tunes that paid homage to two of Van Morrison's big influences; Jackie Wilson and Ray Charles! {Van very fittingly "paid it back" by dueting with "The Master" on what would be Ray Charles' last outing!} We would love to see "Saint Dominic's Preview" & "Tupelo Honey" come around again, but "Street Choir" will suffice nicely for now! Van Morrison is also up there on my short list of "gotta see him live"; although I have heard that Van Morrison live is kind of "Like a box of Chocolates-you never know what you're gonna get!" Still; "Van The Man's" impressive body of work speaks for itself; he is truly a "Singer's Singer". When you step back a bit and look at all the musical styles "The Man" has embraced; it boggles the imagination! From the Raw Blues to the Celtic Mists to Scat Jazz to Funky Soul and Hard Country; this "Belfast Cowboy" keeps on kickin'! Put your "Blue Money" down on this one!...by Grimmbo.
It STILL gives me chills!
I bought this album on vinyl the day it was unpacked in the record store 36 years ago, and "I'll Be Your Lover, Too" still gives me chills down to my soul. I've known love like that, too. Yes, of course, I love the songs that got played on the radio, but as radio is wont to do, those songs got bludgeoned to death. There are a few albums that clearly deserve the designations "classic" or "ageless." This is one of them.
Crazy Face
His 3rd. album is a slight step down from the album Moondance and Astral Weeks But still worhty of a purchase. Contains great classics.
