Getting more refined with each release

While the counter-culture dark framed glasses wearers will probably balk at the increased degree of accessibility Deerhoof is exhibiting with the last 3 albums, I must say that it is starting to sound more and more like “music”, flavored and less like just raw experimentalism. I think Deerhoof is finally coming into their brand of what pop sounds like, meshing their trademarks with traditional music theory. They have realized that not every beautiful moment needs a sudden crash or harsh interruption for the sake of punk! On songs like “Mirrors", they can simmer in the lush and transcend us as the listener. There is much more structure and use of melodic, comprehensible lead guitar, and it comes together so well on this album. They male vocalist is a nice addition, adding a new flavor whenever Satomi’s monotone droning trademark starts to wear on the ear. There’s more soul on this album, and it seems that like Fleetwood Mac did going from the 60’s to the 70’s, Deerhoof is developing their indie into accessible rock, without selling out to the overproduction of One Direction or Imagine Dragons. I can’t wait to see where they go from here!

Better than Fleetwood Mac.

Just Deerhoof doing what they have always done. They continue to explore and amaze and stay true to what music can and should be. James, you sure sound smart, but it doesn’t seem like you have gone very far back in their generous catalog. The "male vocals" have been there from the beginning, as have everything else you describe as “sounding more and more like music.” Open your ears. If you haven’t been able to hear where they’ve already gone from “here” then do yourself a favor and give their back catalog another listen. You seem to be missing something.
