Editors’ Notes

Musing on stormy relationships, female empowerment, and openhearted emotion, Ingrid Michaelson vaults gracefully between buoyant indie pop and lushly produced piano ballads on her fifth studio album. The boldest moments come on surefooted pop tracks—like the leadoff single, “Girls Chase Boys,” and the propulsive, shout-along “Afterlife”—that boast exceptionally catchy hooks and ringing production. But Michaelson's heartbroken meditations, like the atmospheric “Handsome Hands” or cinematic, piano-led “Wonderful Unknown,” are equally powerful examples of her prowess as a songwriter. Calling on a roster of stellar cameos (A Great Big World joins on the string-adorned “Over You” while Mat Kearney offers an uptempo duet with “One Night Town”), Lights Out is every bit as eclectic as it is rewarding.
