Album Review

On their second album, Ben Cooper and Alex Kane aka Electric President pursue a vein of moody pop that could almost be to whatever was called trip-hop as the Postal Service was to synth pop — a revisiting of a played out sound in the hopes that something could be done to re-hotwire it for a later time. Admittedly, Sleep Well is more of a fusion of that and the later work of Slowdive — not to mention a healthy dollop of Orange Cake Mix's bedroom pop efforts, but there's a murky moodiness punctuated by low-key drum loops and shuffles which sound uncannily like an Anglophilic dream of what Bristol 1994 was supposed to be like. Combined with the delicate guitar work and softly sung vocals on songs like "We Will Walk Through Walls," the result is entrancing. Where the band best succeeds is with their ear for anthemic choruses and arrangements delivered in a gentle fashion, such as the suddenly quicker-paced, near talk/singing moments on "Ether," contrasted with calmer breaks and wordless vocals that do the Beach Boys proud without directly aping them, and the swelling vocal and keyboard conclusion to "Graves and the Infinite Arm." But perhaps the conclusion of "Lullaby" shows this best, where after an understandably quiet start the song becomes a majestic blend of rich orchestrations and singing while still sounding like a softly enveloping effort instead of a bludgeoning one. A lovely touch at the end: having one of the briskest and almost sunniest songs titled "When It's Black."

This is Amazing

The melodies are awesome. My favorite so far is Ether, definitely preview that track. Perfect blend of electronic tones and acoustics. Ben Cooper and Alex Kane recorded this album over 13 months in a shed and bedroom in Jacksonville Beach, FL, and the quality is astounding. Their last album was one that never left my "most played" playlist and I this one follows in its footsteps. Overall, I'd say this album is a little less poppy and a little more grim, but by no means depressing. If you like Postal Service, but are ready for something a little more gritty and heartfelt, this is for you. Also check out Radical Face, as that's Ben's other pen name for the less electronic tunes. I can't wait to hear the b-sides!

AWESOME-0000!

I'm really not sure why I started listening to this type of music but for whatever reason, I'm glad I did. I have the other album done by Electric President and when I realized they had another album out, I was excited to see what it sounded like. The songs sound a lot more.... more cleaner, more modern and my favorite of the songs is "All the Bones." I tsounds awesome and really makes the band sound as if they have grown to new levels. I can't wait to see what they have to offer in the future!!!

Sleep Well

This is one of the most amazing albums my ears have ever had the pleasure of listening to. This is the kind of music I wish would still be around 30+ years from now. These guys are musical geniuses and hardly anyone knows about them. The lyrics are deep and meaningful, about his nightmares, and the music is absolutely brilliant. I just don't know how they do it... Buy this album!!!

Though friends Ben Cooper and Alex Kane had been playing music together since 2000, it wasn't until 2004 that they decided to give a name to their project and start laying down their tracks.
