iTunes Editors’ Notes

Many roots and rock songwriters start that process on an acoustic guitar and at some point in their careers decide it'd be best to present their songs the way they first heard them, with only enough accompaniment to strengthen the initial idea. In the tradition of singer/songwriters like Syd Barrett, Johnny Thunders, R. Stevie Moore, Nikki Sudden, Beck, and Jay Reatard, Ty Segall emphasizes his limited acoustic guitar abilities and his emotionally overwhelmed vocal style until the songs sound like the midnight ramblings of a ghost. Of course, this approach also leads some modern writers down the freak-folk path of Devendra Banhart and Kimya Dawson, and you can hear that in the unpolished falsetto styling at the end of "Crazy," the sirens that call in their own key on "She Don't Care," and the seriously warped "6th Street." In other spots, Segall sounds like he misses the chomp of a fuzz-based garage band; "The Man Man" is sung with a rhythmic energy that requires a drummer (and an electric guitar shows up late in the final minute). "Sweet C.C." evokes a memory of T. Rex's Marc Bolan in its cosmic dreams.

Customer Reviews

Incredible.

This album is an emotional journey with a backstory. If you look up Ty's NPR interview, he explains this album and where it comes from. If you can't appreciate how beautiful this work is, well, maybe you've had it all wrong to begin with. This is Ty Segall's masterpiece.

Not what you'd expect...but worth the listen

I am a huge fan of all of Ty Segall's work. This album is a nice change of pace and showcases his abilities as a songwriter.Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to hear him do more electric stuff again, but I'll still be happy to have this to listen to. I also recommend looking into some of his inspiration behind this album, it'll change the way you listen to it. I continue to be ecstatic I found this guy's music. He deserves all the acclaim in the world. Buy this album, and all of his other ones!

T Rex never sounded so good

To say someone is influenced by another artist sometimes connotes 'rip off' or 'artistic liberty'. Well perhaps in this case I hear too much Tyrannosaurus Rex as interpreted by Ty - but Marc Bolan was a great artist.
This mostly acoustic release is so intensely soulful I wish it went on for another hour. He again shows his versatility, this time with minimal instrumentation, a little post production, and his truly beautiful singing voice. It is a breath of fresh air from this prolific rocker who at a young age has already recorded a lifetime of great material.

Biography

Born: June 8, 1987 in Laguna Beach, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Lo-fi musician Ty Segall first garnered public acclaim as the lead singer of Orange County, California garage rock revivalists the Epsilons. With that band, he practiced a rawer, snottier take on Strokes/Vines/White Stripes-style rock, occasionally delving into more retro territory. On his solo album Lemons, however, Segall delivered a much more traditional sound, studiously re-creating '60s guitar tones and drenching his tracks in old-school reverb. The stomping results bore a striking resemblance...
