The brilliant Tally All Things filters all the elements that make this band so appreciated into one concise, emphatic collection. Start with the artwork: a controlled chaos, Pavement–meets–The Fall burst of images and ideas lacking prettiness or perfection; it calls out five core “self evident truths” from each track. And then what emits from your speakers is all jabbing elbows, rancid sweat, broken funk, puffy-eyed smoke, post-beer guzzling throb, and endless winks and nods. In short, it's a damn good time with cowbells, tin can–edged guitar assaults, woozy bass, and handclaps. Oh, and Max Savage’s smartypants, yelping, stoner-guru poetry play: “Forced into morning, tempted into night/Tally all the things that you broke!” There are hints of both of the aforementioned bands in these songs, and in PQ’s music in general—but unlike many who wear influences on their sleeves, these guys aren't afraid to show how they think things should be done. We’re paying attention.
