Chrome Extension for Gmail

February 17, 2011 | Posted by Beau Lebens

A friend of mine pointed out this pretty slick extension for Gmail called socialGmail. It adds Gravatar support into your Gmail account, placing Gravatars in your mail listings, and also within conversation view. Here are a couple of screenshots (taken from the extension page) so you can see how it works:

You should try Rapportive. It’s awesome. Also uses Gravatars, I think: http://rapportive.com/

I had this installed, but didn’t know about http://rapportive.com. Good stuff.

Hey Beau, this is pretty cool. It’s interesting that a lot of people have a Google Profile but they haven’t signed up for a profile with Gravatar yet! I encourage people to use both. With this extension it’s really easy for me to remind my friends to add their gmail address to their Gravatar account. Sounds like a good idea for a blog post doesn’t it? Thanks for the inspiration.

  4. Hi, I’ve implemented a Node.JS gravatar library, as I not saw in developers page. The URL is https://github.com/emerleite/node-gravatar. To install you only need to execute: npm install gravatar.

    Cheers,

    Hi Beau:

Pardon my denseness here (I’m still a big time newbie), but I am presumming that these extensions only work if you are in Chrome, correct?

Is socialGmail a Google developed Chrome browser extension? Or from a third party? I’ve read to be careful using Google Gadgets and Chrome browser extensions that were not created by Google, from a security point of view.

One more question. How is socialGmail different from Gist, another extension for Gmail. Gist is sort of like rapportive, which I like too. The name “Gist” is confusing, because it makes me think of the Gist for comment entries on Github!

Sorry for commenting so long after this was posted, I just read it now!

Sweet extension, just installed. You guys should think about adding google profiles to verified services.

Hi. I would use Gravatars more often if I could have different names attached to the different emails. On my website I’m Wing Girl Kim, but on other sites and blogs attached to my Gmail, I’m me.

If you split your emails out into different accounts (delete from one, create a new one) then you can set up a complete profile for each one.

Started using this extension – pretty cool. Although I also use Rapportive which integrates with Gravatar and so I get images anyway.
