As Puccini’s last work, “Turandot” is a veritable musical testament. In this opera, we can hear everything that goes to make up the Italian maestro’s charm: a moving heroine, expressive and contrasting melodies ... all carried forward by the timeless themes of love and death.

In Turandot, Puccini transports us to an old, imaginary China. In the heart of Beijing, the destiny of a love triangle plays out: the cruel PrincessTurandot, the Tartar prince Calaf – who is madly in love with her –and the slave Liù, who is in love with Calaf. The guessing game that links these three characters will end in tragedy.

The video artist Franc Aleudirects this new Catalan production. For his first experience as a director, he transportsTurandot... into space. It is in this futuristic setting that the voices ofIréne Theorin (Turandot), Ermonela Jaho (Liù), Jorge de León (Calaf), Chris Merritt (Altoum), and Alexander Vinogradov (Timur) shine.

In the orchestra pit but also on the stage we find the Symphony Orchestra and Choir of the Liceu OperaBarcelona and the Cor Vivaldi. These three ensembles are conducted by Josep Pons,Conxita Garcia and Òscar Boada respectively. A vocal and instrumental casting that reflects the magnificence of this work.

Performance recorded on 15 October 2019 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona.
