3.0 out of 5 stars Antiquated pricing/distribution January 17, 2015
I love Audible and I hate it. If you are an audio book fan, they have the latest releases with the best narrators around. The quality is premium compared to their only real competitor, the library. However the pricing/distribution structure is antiquated and unacceptably high. I would be an enthusiastic booster for Audible if it ran on the newer model like Netflix or Spotify and allowed users access to ALL of its content for a subscription fee, rather than a monumentally high subscription fee for access to a single audio book. Audio books being the length that they are, no one could over use the service to excess and we'd all feel like we were getting a great deal. The current pricing/distribution structure is too cost prohibitive for anyone new to audio books to bother even trying them out, leaving this as an exclusive service to an exclusive audience with a dwindling population. The lack of a formidable competitor has turned this potentially awesome service into an overpriced monopoly.

For my own part, I've decided to save the $17 a month and queue up the digital selections that are available for free through my local library service.

This trial really is a no-strings-attached trial! It was extremely easy to cancel at any time (See the bottom of this review for directions). I originally cancelled it after my trial but after a year I decided to start up my membership again. Both processes went smoothly.

As for Audible, itself. I truly love the wide selection of books it has to offer. The 1-year return (with no questions asked) policy of any book is a great convenience too. It's wonderful how Audible syncs across many devices so I never have to find where I last dropped off at. I'd encourage anyone to give this program a try. You might end up missing it like I did.

Thanks for a great program, Amazon!

Here are the directions for cancellation because it seems to be a commonly asked question:

1. Sign in to your Audible account
2. Click the part that says "Hi, [Your Name]!" on the top center of the page.
3. In the drop-down menu that appears click "Account Details"
4. The second box from the top is titled "Account Settings" and within that box it says "Cancel my membership". Click that and follow the self-explanatory steps :)

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware of credit card charges February 11, 2015
By C Hunt
1 star because Audible.com charged my credit card 28 days into the 30 day trial and after I had already cancelled the trial. Charging a customer before the end of a trial is an unethical business practice and a gross misuse of credit card information.

It's a nice option to try audible books, however, I was charged before the full month was up for a Gold plan which was $16 per month. When I contacted Amazon, they refunded it. However, you may want to cancel 2 days before your month is up in order to avoid the hassle.
Also, they recommend options that I didn't know where available when I cancelled in the cancellation process: 7.95 for 3 months, and a 9.95 year light reading plan without accumulating credits. You may like those options, but why not offer them before in an open way?
Audible is not loud enough on the new HD7 Fire without connecting to a stereo or headphones in the car, so that was a big disappointment as I wanted to try it out and let both of us enjoy listening on the road. If you have an older car, it just isn't an option.

I have used Audible for several years and love almost everything about it. For most of that time, I commuted about 30 miles to work and Audible changed that from an onerous task to something to which I looked forward. It can't be beat for long-distance drives when combined with the music I loaded on my iPod.

One thing I learned from experience: If you use the Enhanced format and your book is longer than about 18 hours, the content may become corrupted during download. Switch to Format 4, which will break the book into smaller parts, but will prevent the audio from skipping parts or the narrative from ending prematurely.

Audible has always been willing to restore credit to my account when I return a book, even if it's just because I didn't like it. If there has been an issue, though there seldom is, they have given me a free credit. That's good customer service.

I am taking one star off because at this time Amazon does not let us use gift cards as partial payment for membership renewal.

5.0 out of 5 stars I only have good things to say about Audible October 31, 2014
By Kelly
I only have good things to say about Audible. It has become an essential part of my daily train commute. I particularly love the author-narrated books -- they take on a whole new amazing dynamic (a hilarious example: Amy Poehler's "Yes, Please"). The membership come with credits that you exchange for any book in the Audible library. If you use a credit on a book you're not crazy about, you can exchange it. Really simple.

1.0 out of 5 stars Recordings DO NOT have chapters! It's one huge file ... January 21, 2015
Recordings DO NOT have chapters! It's one huge file and if you close the book you have to remember where you left off. Also you MUST keep paying every month. If you are a slow reader (listener) you wind up having books backed up! Also the books are DRM protected so it's hard to share with a spouse etc. Customer service offers little help other than speaking the company line! Stay away!
