Michael Phelps beats Ryan Lochte again, sets himself up as London favorite

    (AP)

Michael Phelps has regained his title as the world's best swimmer; for now. The Olympic legend defeated Ryan Lochte in their third duel in a U.S trials final on Saturday night, narrowly out touching him by .09 seconds in the 200 IM.

It was Phelps' second consecutive victory over Lochte at the trials. Lochte had drawn first blood on Monday night by winning the 400 IM and Phelps returned the favor two nights later with a close victory in the 200 free.

The most recent victory comes in an event that Lochte has dominated since Beijing. He broke Phelps' world record in the event at the world championships in 2009 and then lowered it last year in Shanghai with a blistering swim that was the first record set since rubberized suits were banned in 2010.

Phelps' used strong turns to stay ahead of Lochte and then held off a furious rally in the final 15 meters. Both swimmers were seeded with times nearly two seconds clear of the next-fastest competitor and were more than a body length ahead of the field by the time they made the transition from breaststroke to freestyle. With their Olympic berths assured, what was the motivation to win?

For Phelps, it was to send a warning shot to Lochte that he was back to reclaim the throne he abdicated after Beijing. Lochte would have wanted to plant a seed of doubt in Phelps head. For the past three years, Phelps has geared everything towards London. Results were irrelevant; peaking in July 2012 was all that mattered.

He's accomplished that. Phelps has positioned himself once again as the swimmer to beat in London. And Ryan Lochte is back in his role as the man who would be king.

The swimming competition at the 2012 Olympics begins in exactly four weeks. Game on.

I don't care who gets 1 or 2 as long as it's both of them getting 1 and 2. I'm so excited!!!!

I would prefer to see more gold around Ryan Locke since Michael Phelps won so much the last time. But I do wish both of them the best.

I can get on board with that logic, Rose! But as long as USA is bringing in the hardware, I'm satisfied :)

Chris Chase knows as much about swimming as I do about brain surgery.

I highly doubt that. My best assumption is that you know far more about brain surgery than chase knows about swimming. Don't sell yourself short!!

Anyone still making a fool of themselves mocking Phelps? Worth more than $150,000,000.00 he is about to gather more medals to add to his 14 count. SEARCH Michael Phelps dates -- MIchael Phelps girl friend - Michael Phelps lover & look at pics of the LADIES

yeah right, search michael phelps and see his picture hitting a pot pipe. I have no use for him. What a role model....and we are behind him....not me. what an idiot.

@Blue. why are we so quick to judge others on their personal lives. are you perfect? at least he can be a role model in the sense of teaching others that when you have a goal a dream it can never be out of reach once you commit to and sacrifice and believe.

The great thing about Phelps is, when he got beat, he took it like a man and made no excuses. Unlike Usain Bolt, who blamed the other runners for distracting him in the starting blocks. "Tito get me some tissue, Germaine, stop teasing!"

true dat....Bolt sounds just like Deion Sanders did whenever he got burned...."oh, my pinky toe hurt"
      • noturaveragemoron 1 hour 7 minutes ago
Yep - a true champion doesn't make excuses. They give credit where credit is due.

He did get distracted and because of the one-and-done rule the guy weren't called for the false start. That is a valid excuse. Even still Bolt run past 4 guys to get 2nd place.

I think this is really great. Having real competition helps atheletes. Too often an athelete won't enter an event that he doesn't feel he can win hands down, or doesn'y want to distact a potential olympic teammate. Any event that both of these guys are in is a guaranteed 1-2 finish for team USA.
