Album Review

On this rare 1966 Chicago garage rock single, the Rooks exhibited, like many bands of their sort, a heavy influence from the R&B-oriented groups of the British Invasion. The A-side, "A Girl Like You," is a decent original quite indebted to the sort of fuzz guitar riffs heard on the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and Them's "I Can Only Give You Everything." The Stones are paid more explicit tribute on the B-side, a straightforward cover of that group's "Empty Heart" that goes into a Yardbirds-style rave-up at the end. The single was reissued 40 years later by Sundazed in a picture sleeve with a historical liner note on the back cover.

One of the RAREST of All '66 Garage Singles

Anytime we can offer up a mid-sixties garage band from our favorite hotbed, the Windy City (particularly a combo citing Them and the Pretty Things as faves!!), good things can be expected for the beat-crazed connoisseur. Now, when it turns out to be one of the RAREST of all '66 garage singles, namely the Rooks' classic two-sider, "A Girl Like You"/"Empty Heart," it's an EVENT. From the original master tape, augmented with an amazing photo. Why blow your retirement nest egg on an original copy when it sounds incredible on always-reasonably priced Sundazed digital? If you like this artist, you might also like: the Spiders, the Brogues and the Sparkles.

Yes!!!

Sundazed, I think I'm in love with you. I can't believe this is on iTunes. Please keep it coming. Just go ahead and put your entire catalog on here.

The Rooks gained a cult following among power pop fans in the 1990s with a style drawing its main inspirations from the Beatles, Big Star, and the Replacements. Leader and co-founder Mike Mazzarella (vocals, rhythm guitar) formed the group in New York with drummer Patrick Yourell in 1990 after their previous outfit, a Connecticut band called the Broken Hearts, dissolved. An early incarnation of the Rooks featured Mazzarella's friend and fellow power-popper Richard X. Heyman, as well as Heyman's wife...
