iTunes Review
With most of the songs centered on the subject of love and romance, it's easy to see this 1997 album as a love letter from YLT's husband and wife team of Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley to one another. But it's just as accurate to view the thing as a love letter to fans who'd stuck with them since their inception in the early '80s. Easily their most varied album to date, it is a delightful, sonically challenging, selection of experimental pop songs. I Can Hear the Heart segues perfectly from pure pristine pop numbers and pleasantly soothing drones to amped-up, funky, almost Tortoise-like burners. This remains the single best introduction to the Hoboken trio, even though they now have several best-of collections.

An Unknown Classic
Listening to I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One is like reliving a dream. It's something so good you can't believe they captured it on record. Every layer, every little sound creates a buzz that is a joy to listen to. It gives the album depth that will keep you impressed the next listen. The album is soft and nice with its darker moments like "Damage" and "Shadows". As well as including the covers of "Little Honda" and "My Little Corner of the World", both seem right at home with the other tracks and flow nicely. Being the groups eigth release they still have innovation left to offer and songs that break away from the norm. Every song serves its purpose and transforms your mood, taking away your problems for the 65 minute period it fills. The band has made an album for the music lover. Its perfection is raw and uncut. The songs play their role in the overall feel of the record, and upon finishing it you get a deep feeling of satisfaction. Yo La Tengo's I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One pretty much defines bliss. So how could it get anything but... A Bliss of 9
My favorite YLT album
This is simply a beautiful record. My favorite tracks - "Stockholm Syndrome," "Autumn Sweater," "One PM Again," "The Lie and How We Told It," and "Center of Gravity" (I'm a sucker for a bossa nova beat). And I love the fact that they covered "Little Honda" and "My Little Corner of the World," and nailed both songs. It shows off YLT's range, but is a cohesive, lovely whole.
One of the greatest albums of the '90s
Easily the pinnacle of a great band's output, covering such a wide range of sound, color, intensity, and emotion, while still remaining very cohesive. Whenever I'm forced to choose my favorite album of the '90s, it always comes down to a dead heat between this and My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. Loveless was more of a seismic shift in the musical lanscape, certainly, but this is definitely the more varied of the two albums. Absolutely essential.
