iTunes Editors’ Notes

Billy Ocean had been bouncing around the U.K. for more than 10 years before he became an overnight success with the release of 1984’s Suddenly. “Caribbean Queen (No More Love on the Run)” was a perfect song for the Miami Vice era. It was as persuasively catchy as Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” but with added international flair. Most importantly, the cross-cultural Ocean had a one-of-a-kind voice that could play in any country but would never be mistaken for another singer. Following its hit single, the remaining tracks on Suddenly borrow from the American electro-funk of Prince and Mtume, but with a light touch that was perfectly suited to Ocean’s silky but quirky vocals. In the same way that Ocean had connections to multiple countries, he could connect to multiple genres, from funk (“Lucky Man”) to new wave (“Loverboy”) to adult-oriented ballads (“Suddenly”). Suddenly made its way onto many playlists of the era because Ocean was an original with genuine life experience, and that authenticity was reflected in his music.

Suddenly

Billy Ocean's first charted LP for Arista "Suddenly" I thought was a pretty decent album. The LP featured the number 1 Billboard hit "Caribbean Queen (No More Love On The Run) along with 3 other Hot 100 charted hits, "Loverboy", "Suddenly" & "Mystery Lady". What would have been nice to include is the very hard to find version of Caribbean Queen titled "African Queen (No More Love On The Run)" which was the "B" side of "Mystery Lady", but for some strange reason was left off the LP and CD. When will the record company's give us everything?

Suddenly...

I really like Billy's songs, especially "Suddenly" and Caribbean Queen." Two of the top '80's R&B songs of all-time.

Caribbean Queen

Great music for working out or West Coast Swing dancing. Captures the sensuous side of the era.

Billy Ocean was one of the first Caribbean singers to be embraced by MTV, resulting in a string of Top Ten hits during the mid-'80s. Born Leslie Charles in Trinidad on January 21, 1950, Ocean moved to England at the age of eight, and by his teenaged years, was singing regularly in London clubs. During this time, Ocean paid the bills by working at Ford Motors, but continued to pen songs and perform, as he issued an obscure debut single in 1974 under the name of Scorched Earth. But by 1975, the singer...
