Album Review

One hour, 54 minutes, and 12 seconds of innovative funk on two discs is nothing to sneeze at, particularly when the tracks are prime Ohio Players cuts. Mercury adroitly chronicles their chart-blazing career with full-length, unedited versions of winners and album treats. From the bluesy, strutting "Jive Turkey" to "More Than Love," the group displays its superb musicianship and ingenuity on 28 slabs of funk and soul. The guys proved they can slow jam with anyone on "Together" and the super-lush "Honey." The Ohio Players were affectionately known as Sugarfoot, Billy, Pee Wee, Merv, Diamond, Rock, and Satch, all of whom contributed collectively in the writing and production of all the songs. Everyone is familiar with the hits, and most of their fans already have them; it's the unsung pearl like "Good Luck Charm" that makes Funk on Fire a must — along with the convenience of having all these smokin' grooves in one sweet package.

Hall of Famers

The Ohio Players were without question the most unique sounding R&B group of the 70's, and created one of the most original sound styles of any musical era.Truth be told, Earth, Wind & Fire could not touch these brothers musicianship. If you listen real closely and compare the Ohio Players musical sound to other R&B group recordings of the 70's era, you can detect a Master student relationship and the Ohio Players were clearly the Masters. The 3 Albums, Skin Tight, Fire, and Honey, absolutely destroys the competition of any other R&B group of the same time period. This is not an opinion, this is a FACT!!! If you collect music and you do not have the 3 aforementioned albums within your collection you simply do not have a good ear for MUSIC.

Blown away

Alright, I'll be completly honest with you. I am a true Death metal fan. I love these guy's music no matter who says anything. Sure, I may listen to Cannibal Corpse, or Amon Amarth. But these guys know all about the art of music. A MUST BUY!

The other guy

Who posted the review before me says it all. All this garbage that comes out now can't contend with songs like "Love RollerCoaster"

With their slinky, horn-powered grooves, impeccable musicianship, and eye-popping album covers, the Ohio Players were among the top funk bands of the mid-'70s. Emerging from the musical hotbed of Dayton in 1959, the group was originally dubbed the Ohio Untouchables, and initially comprised singer/guitarist Robert Ward, bassist Marshall "Rock" Jones, saxophonist/guitarist Clarence "Satch" Satchell, drummer Cornelius Johnson, and trumpeter/trombonist Ralph "Pee Wee" Middlebrooks. In late 1961, a relative...
